About the Item

Ryan Wilks Crabs In A Bucket 2023 Archival Pigment Print 19.5 x 15.8 inches Edition: 50 Signed, numbered and dated by hand, lower right COA provided Ryan Wilks is a self-taught artist based in Kansas City, Missouri, whose work delves into the diverse realities of queer existence. Using oils, watercolors, sculptural assemblage, and ritual, Wilks illuminates queer expressions of spirituality and sexuality. Their art confronts the use of religion as a weapon and explores new forms of prayer through visual and participatory exhibitions. By incorporating religious and archetypal iconography such as the Devil and Lilith, Wilks expresses gender and queer ideologies without adopting the weight of traditional religious rites. Instead, their work invites viewers to engage in a modernized expression of spirit. Through figurative and narrative drawing and painting, as well as community-based performance rituals and ceremonies, Ryan Wilks creates art that explores the various realities of queer existence. Drawing inspiration from centuries-old religious iconography and the oral and written histories documenting the queer experience from the beginning of time to their own personal experience today, Wilks strives to depict the push/pull, persecute/elevate relationships of humanity, sexuality, and spirituality. Wilks intentionally uses traditional materials and methods in their painting and drawing as a nod to Italian masters such as Caravaggio, Titian, and Raphael. However, it is the playfulness of Matisse’s figures and the contorting figures of Schiele that have most influenced their work. Ritual and ceremonial performance are integral aspects of Wilks' art. The use of both found and made objects, along with base elemental ingredients in occult practices, are key components of their performances. Through movement, ceremony, and studied and adaptive rituals, Wilks engages audiences and creates moments of sacred memory. Their performance work is created and displayed in tandem with their 2-D work, further exploring concepts within their paintings and drawings. Through these methods of creating, engaging, and displaying their art, Ryan Wilks strives to express the personal narrative of their queer experience, as well as those of their peers and predecessors, ultimately providing future generations with material to research, decode, confront, and enjoy.
