About the Item

Clarence Holbrook Carter (1904–2000) was an American painter whose career spanned realism, regionalism, and ultimately a distinctly Surrealist vision. By the mid-20th century, he became known for dreamlike landscapes filled with symbolic shapes and enigmatic space. In Mirage, Carter is represented by seven original serigraphs on paper. These colorful compositions evoke heat and hallucination, with soft gradients and floating, biomorphic forms that hover in a kind of suspended stillness.
