About the Item

A very interesting and important Engraving, framed between two glasses and two colors natural and gilded wood frame of the Plan of the palace of Caprarola that inspired the American architect George Bergstrom in the building of the Pentagon at Washington D.C. Falda Giovanni Battista Engraver, (1643 - 1678) and De Rossi Giovanni Giacomo publisher (1627-1691) “Plan of the Palace of Caprarola” work part of the series “Palaces of Rome of the most famous architects”, etching on paper, 51x36 cm, published in Rome by Calcografia Camerale (1738/ 1870) Bibliography: - Nagler G.K., Neues Allgemeines Kunster-Lexikon, V. 4 p. 236, 1835-52 - Thieme U. - Becker F., Allgemeines Lexikon Der Bildenden Kunstler, V. 11 p. 227, 1907-50 The Villa Farnese, also known as Villa Caprarola, is a pentagonal mansion in the town of Caprarola in the province of Viterbo, Northern Lazio, Italy, approximately 50 kilometres (31 mi) north-west of Rome, originally commissioned and owned by the House of Farnese. In 1504, Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, the future Pope Paul III, acquired the estate at Caprarola. He had designs made for a fortified castle or rocca by the architects Antonio da Sangallo the Younger and Baldassare Peruzzi. The villa is one of the finest examples of Renaissance architecture. Ornament is used sparingly to achieve proportion and harmony. Thus while the villa dominates the surroundings, its severe design also complements the site. This particular style, known today as Mannerism, was a reaction to the earlier High Renaissance designs of twenty years earlier.
