About the Item

Signed lower center, in pencil, '(nach) Luigi Kasimir' (Austro-Hungarian, 1881-1962) by a member of the artist's family workshop. Paper dimensions: 17.5 x 24 inches Austrian etcher and painter Luigi Kasimir attended the Vienna Academy of Art where he studied under William Unger, who introduced him to colored etching. Kasimir was influenced by Anders Zorn and Karl von Kalckreuth and further studied with Sigmund L'Allemand. A pioneer in the colored etching technique, Kasimir began exhibiting in 1905 and received critical recognition soon after. Starting with a sketch, usually in pastel, Kasimir then transferred the design by hand on as many as four to six plates and applied the color by hand to each plate. The work of Luigi Kasimir is held in private and public collections throughout the world including in the permanent collections of New York's Metropolitan Museum and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, among others.
