I saw these Acocets on the North Norfolk coast in a wetlands just below the dunes. They are inspiring birds with a delicate beak and sophisticated wading behaviour.
Rob Barnes, artist, is available for sale online and in our art gallery at Wychwood Art. Rob Barnes studied painting and printmaking at Hull College of Art and London University in the early 1960s. He taught etching, screen-printing, lino and related surface printmaking at Keswick Hall College in Norfolk. He later moved to the University of East Anglia, Norwich where he continued teaching in the School of Education until 2006. Presently he divides his time between printmaking and his other passion, playing the violin in local orchestras and for choral performances. In 2017 he began making a small number of sterling silver jewellery pieces following a course at West Dean, Sussex. His artwork follows themes, such as light on water, or shadows in the landscape. Dragons is a serigraph on paper with an image size 13 x 13 inches, signed 'Ricker' lower right and annotated lower left. Framed in a contemporary gold-tone frame. Numbered 29/200, from the edition of 500 (there were also 50 Roman on paper, 200 Arabic on canvas and 50 Roman on canvas). Framed in a contemporary silver-tone moulding.
Ricker created four stunning images for a suite titled ‘Sacred Places’ – all powerful images of earthly splendor. The vistas he paints, almost desolate in a primeval way, are a chorus of voices that sing of the glory of nature. In a style which he calls ‘Epic Visionary,’ he presents a view that is at once new and fresh and yet as deep-rooted and enduring as the pristine landscapes themselves.
In the images of ‘Sacred Places,’ Ricker’s harmonious layering and blending of colors, muted blues and greens, contrast with the jutting precipices and craggy outcrops of rock that punctuate each portrait. The effects of the elements are visible and beautiful, creating carved layers in the rock and earth, and weaving a ribbon of shimmering water as a central feature in each work.

Riverside Oystercatchers by Rob Barnes is a limited edition linocut print using a Key Block and a Reduction Block resulting in several layers of printing. This landscape was inspired by a riverside walking area in Suffolk where there are often numerous Oystercatchers. Rob was trying to achieve a strong sunset image with Oystercatcher movement highlighted across the river. He is inspired by the East Anglian coast and landscape, much of which appears in his linocut prints. Many of these show Rob’s keen interest in the use of colour blends, light on water, and graduations of tone. Rob Barnes studied painting and printmaking at Hull College of Art and London University in the early 1960s. He taught etching, screen-printing, linocut and related surface printmaking at Keswick Hall College in Norfolk. He later moved to the University of East Anglia where he continued teaching in the School of Education until 2006. He is based in South Norfolk. He has exhibited regularly in London and many of his etchings and linocuts are in private collections, here and abroad. More recently he has returned to linocuts, enjoying the strong physical nature of this medium. His linocuts are inspired mainly by the landscape of East Anglia. Henry A. Papprill (1816–1903) was a British engraver. Noted as an aquatint engraver from 1840. His plates were published from 1840 till 1883 mainly by Ackermann of the Strand.
Papprill was born in Holborn, London. Lived for much of his life at Wharton Street, Lloyd Square, London. Papprill is thought to have been based in New York City for brief period in the mid-1840s. His work in the USA appears to classify him as an American engraver but he was based and gained his reputation and bulk of his work in England.
He produced a series of works for Ackermann & Co from 1840 beginning with four plates called "The Jolly Squire", with verses, after James Pollard.
In the following years Papprill engraved a number of military plates for Ackermann as well a series of engravings of New York (1846-9) for H.I.Megarey (published in New York). The most notable of these are: "The North West Angle of Fort Columbus, Governor's Island" (the Catherwood-Papprill view) and New York from the Steeple of St. Paul's Church, Looking East, South & West." (The Hill-Papprill view) listed in the American Historical Prints - Early Views of American Cities, etc: I.N.Phelps Stokes & Daniel C. Haskell. New York Public Library 1932.
Papprill also produced for Ackermann a series of sporting prints after G. H. Laporte between 1860 and 1865. These were entitled: Racing, Hunting and Coursing. He also produced a series of shipping prints...
