Copperplate etching by Martin Lewis titled "Under the Street Lamp." Edition of 100. Printed on laid paper with watermark and 83 recorded impressions. McCarron catalogue raisonne #70. Signed in pencil with "imp" next to the signature. In the bottom right corner is a penciled 75 and in the top right corner is a 50. The etching is framed and was taken out of the frame for condition report and photographs. The gallery label is on the back of the matte inside the frame.
Dimensions without Frame: H 15 in x W 9.5 in.
Artist Biography: Martin Lewis (1881-1962) was born in Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia on 7 June 1881. He was the second of eight children and had a passion for drawing. At the age of 15, he left home and traveled in New South Wales, Australia, and in New Zealand, working as a pothole digger and a merchant seaman. He returned to Sydney and settled into a Bohemian community outside Sydney. Two of his drawings were published in the radical Sydney newspaper, The Bulletin. He studied with Julian Ashton at the Art Society's School in Sydney. Ashton, an English-born Australian artist and teacher, known for his support of the Heidelberg School and for his influential art school in Sydney. Padstow Harbour is a limited edition print by by Anna-Louise Felstead. The bright colours and free flowing lines capture the friendly and cheerful atmosphere of Padstow in Cornwall.
Anna-Louise graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2003 having received first class honours from Central Saint Martins. She is often regarded as a reportage artist, for her work is generally painted on location in ink on paper. These studies are then used as reference material and scaled up into large oil on canvas paintings. From 2009-2011 Anna-Louise had an art gallery in Cornwall, where she exclusively showed her own work documenting village life, local architecture and scenes from the bay. Working on snow scenes is always a challenge as there is no room for error keeping white paper unmarked. This is difficult because a lino block is almost empty, with few marks except the essential ones. In this linocut I have included a typical winter light, but the main event is the shadows changing shade and colour across the snow.

Comes from Samuel and Nathaniel Buck's three volume portfolio "Buck's Antiquities" or "Venerable Remains of Above 400 Castles, Monasteries, Palaces in England and Wales" (1726-1739), which consists of 428 engravings. Both "Oakham Castle" and "Nottingham Park/Castle" have unidentified watermarks in the center of their sheets. They both also have "Liverpool Free Public Library" chop mark/blind stamps at bottom center of their sheets. Old price pencil inscribed in margins.
