About the Item
This electrifying original vintage poster was created in 1906 by Leonetto Cappiello, the visionary Italian-born artist widely considered the father of modern advertising. Commissioned to promote Pneumatiques Torrilhon, a tire manufacturer based in Clermont-Ferrand, the image captures Cappiello’s revolutionary use of bold graphics, exaggerated characters, and high-contrast compositions to captivate passersby and create instant brand recognition.
The artwork features a fiery red devil—eyes gleaming, mouth grinning—biting down on a gleaming white tire, which encircles his face like a snare. The message is humorous and effective: even the devil himself can’t destroy a Torrilhon tire. Set against a deep black background, the composition is visually arresting, with the devil’s red form and the silver-gray of the tire popping vividly from the darkness.
Leonetto Cappiello (1875-1942) was an Italian poster artist who worked in Paris. He is known for modernizing advertising design for the 20th Century. His compositions are uncomplicated and often feature a graceful figure with an oversized rendition of the product against a simple color background. The typography is often minimized to be as direct and short as possible. This innovation allowed for the advertising to be eye-catching and understood at a moment’s glance. It was ideal for the fast-paced travel and attention of busy city life.
This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. It is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

Leonetto Cappiello
Leonetto Cappiello was born in 1875 in Livorno, Italy, but took on the nationality of French in 1930. He first achieved fame as a caricaturist, then by inventing the modern poster and creating the first brand logos, including the green devil for Maurin Quina. A self-taught artist, he created his first paintings in 1886. In November of 1900, he signed his first contract with the publisher P. Vercasson, for whom he produced posters from 1902 to 1913. After World War I he joined the publisher Devambez, for whom he worked until 1936. In 1922, his poster sketches were exhibited at the Venice Biennial and the French Institut in New York. In 1928 his “Self Portrait” was ordered by the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. In 1936 he participated in the Milan Triennial and the Exhibition of the French Poster in Prague. After his death in 1942, Cappiello’s work was the subject of retrospectives at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris in 1947, the House of Culture in Livorno, Italy, in 1960 and the Grand Palais in Paris in 1981.

Born in Tokyo in 1941, Takayanagi's artistic journey began when he enrolled at Tokyo University of the Arts in 1960, studying under the renowned oil painter Kaoru Yamaguchi. His talent was quickly recognized when he received an Honorable Mention at the 8th Shell Arts Award Exhibition in the same year.
During his time at university, Takayanagi took an intensive course in copper plate printing under Tetsuro Komai, receiving his degree from the graduate school in 1966. Fascinated by the simultaneous color print method, he started creating copperplate prints and soon gained recognition for his unique metallic reliefs, which he produced using collages of English newspapers.
Takayanagi's passion for experimentation led him to create metallic emboss reliefs using his own photographs, and in the latter half of the 1980s, he moved on to silkscreen prints. He continued to push the boundaries of his art, constantly exploring new techniques and mediums.
In 1978 and the following year, Takayanagi was appointed as an arts researcher for the Ministry of Culture and traveled to the United States, France, and the UK. These experiences enriched his artistic perspective and further cemented his reputation as a highly regarded artist.
Takayanagi was part of the influential printmaking group Sosaku Hanga, which emerged in the early 20th century in Japan. This movement emphasized the artist's involvement in every stage of the printmaking process, from designing the image to carving and printing the blocks.
Takayanagi's work often incorporates elements of nature and landscape, with an emphasis on texture and pattern. He also experimented with collage, incorporating found materials like newspaper clippings and photographs into his prints.
Takayanagi's work has been exhibited extensively in Japan and internationally, including at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo. He has also received numerous awards for his contributions to printmaking, including the Japan Print Association Award and the Purple Ribbon Medal...
