Lovis Corinth
Drei Grazien (Three Graces)

1920

About the Item

Drei Grazien (Three Graces) Etching and drypoint, 1920 Signed and titled in pencil (see photo) Total Edition 100: 30 on Japan and 70 on Butten paper as here Published by von Wohlgemuth & Liffner, Berlin The Three Graces were mythological goddesses – Euphrosyne, Aglaia and Thalia – presiding over dining, dance, and entertainment. The Corinth painting of this subject was created in 1904 (see photo). It was owned by the Levy family and was supposedly confiscated by the Nazi's in 1940. It was determined by the courts that the painting had made it to the United States and had been sold by the Buchholz Gallery Curt Valentin in New York. The court rejected the Levy claim for restitution. Condition: Excellent Plate: 13 1/4 x 10 1/4" Sheet size: 19 3/8 x 14 inches Reference: Singer 394 ii/II with the title and date above "Painter, printmaker, draftsman. After eleven years of academic training in Königsberg, Munich, and Paris, settled in Berlin in 1901. Quickly became a leading figure of the Berlin Secession, an exhibiting society that favored the German style of Impressionism, and gained representation from Paul Cassirer’s gallery. More than a generation older than the Expressionists, his long, prolific, and highly successful career extends from the academic tradition of the late nineteenth century to German Impressionism and finally Expressionism. Although he criticized the Expressionists for being influenced by foreign strains like French Fauvism and “primitive” art, after a stroke in 1911 his naturalistic style yielded to a frenetically expressive treatment of favored subjects such as nudes, historical and literary themes, and self-portraits, the latter of which meditated increasingly on own mortality. Made 1,200 prints, including many in portfolios and illustrated books. First tried printmaking in 1890s as a way to improve his draftsmanship, but made most of his prints near the end of his career during the postwar economic crisis, when it became it a more marketable medium. Made only eleven woodcuts; favored lithography and the fuzzy, burr-rich lines of drypoint. Worked with many publishers, including Paul Cassirer, and after 1920 closely collaborated with Verlag Fritz Gurlitt. Declaring them degenerate, Nazis removed 295 works from public collections." After traveling extensively in Europe, Phillips accepted a teaching position at Pennsylvania State University. He returned to Europe in 1962 to teach for two years at the American College in Paris. On his return to the United States in 1964, Phillips joined the faculty of Bard College in upstate New York, where he taught until moving to California in 1987. As early as 1961, Phillips had begun making monotypes and writing about the process. His efforts to organize monotype exhibitions, as well as his own concentration on the medium, helped to reintroduce contemporary artists to a technique that had been favored by ninteenth-century artists. Phillips?s subtle and delicate prints have been inspired in part by the monotypes of Maurice Brazil Prendergast...

A contemporary of David Hockney and Peter Blake, Colin Self is an important British printmaker whose innovative etching techniques and novel use of found materials have defined his diverse oeuvre. Yet unlike most artists associated with Pop Art, Self eschewed glossy, colorful bombast for nuanced drawings in a limited palette. Self's imagery has ranged from the geopolitical -- nuclear bombers, fallout shelters; to American icons -- hot dogs, Coca Cola cans; to the everyday -- intimate scenes of animals and plants, and whimsical figure drawings as seen here.
