Keith Haring Public Illumination 1981: A rare, highly collectible small pamphlet-style art magazine (measuring 4.25 x 2.75 inches), featuring a centerfold spread illustrated by Keith Haring, playfully credited under the moniker "Kip Herring." The illustrations include some of the artist’s signature early motifs: including Haring dogs, Haring crawling babies, and kinetic figures. Keith Haring was an American artist and social activist known for his illustrative depictions of figures and symbols. His white chalk drawings could often been found on the blank poster marquees in New York’s public spaces and subways. “I don't think art is propaganda,” he once stated. “It should be something that liberates the soul, provokes the imagination and encourages people to go further. It celebrates humanity instead of manipulating it.” Born on May 4, 1958 in Reading, PA, he grew up in neighboring Kutztown, where he was inspired to draw from an early age by Walt Disney cartoons and his father who was an amateur cartoonist. After briefly studying commercial art in Pittsburgh, Haring came across a show of the works of Pierre Alechinksy and decided to pursue a career in fine art instead. He moved to New York in the late 1970s to attend the School of Visual Arts, and soon immersed himself in the city’s graffiti culture. By the mid-1980s, he had befriended fellow artists Andy Warhol, Kenny Scharf, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, and collaborated with celebrities like the singer Grace Jones. Diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in 1988, Haring’s prodigious career was brief, and he died of AIDS-related complications on February 16, 1990 at the age of 31. Before his death, Haring established the Keith Haring Foundation, a non-profit committed to raising awareness of the illness through art programing and community outreach. Throughout his career, Haring made his art widely available through the location of his murals, as well as through the Pop Shop—Haring's own storefront which he used to sell his memorabilia.The artist’s mural Crack is Wack (1986), can still be seen today on a retaining wall along FDR Drive in Manhattan. Haring’s works can be found in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. Keith Haring Stonewall 20th Anniversary/The Center Show, New York, NY 1989: RARE, historic 1980s fold-out poster illustrated by Keith Haring to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Riots at “The Center” (aka, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Community Center on W 13th St in Manhattan). As part of ‘The Center Show,’ Haring also created his now much famed bathroom mural, "Once Upon a Time". Medium: Offset-printed folding poster announcement. Dimensions: 8.5 x 11 inches folded closed (opens to 11 x 17 in). Condition: fold-lines as originally issued; some scattered surface markings & signs of handling; staining to lower right; in otherwise good overall vintage condition. Printed signature from an edition of unknown; few known to have survived. An extremely rare Keith Haring activist poster that is not to be passed upon. Further Background: The Stonewall Riots, also called the Stonewall Uprising, began in the early hours of June 28, 1969 when New York City police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay club located in Greenwich Village in New York City. The raid sparked a riot among bar patrons and neighborhood residents as police roughly hauled employees and patrons out of the bar, leading to six days of protests and violent clashes with law enforcement outside the bar on Christopher Street, in neighboring streets and in nearby Christopher Park. The Stonewall Riots served as a catalyst for the gay rights movement in the United States and around the world. ‘The Center’: When the LGBT Community Center invited Haring in 1989 to create a work in their new 13th Street home, he enthusiastically accepted & titled the piece Once Upon a Time, a nod to the gay community’s halcyon days of free love. Over the course of several days, he covered every un-tiled surface of the 2nd floor bathroom with turgid, squirting penises of all sizes. Some are attached to buff male bodies tangled together in pleasure. Others float like happy clouds or hungry dragons. One impressively large specimen hovers over a line of small figures who are either dancing the conga or enjoying an orgy. When he painted the mural, Haring was fighting his own battle with AIDS; he’d been diagnosed just a year before, in 1988. During the late 1980s, he and his community not only faced the fear of death, but also disregard and antagonization from the Reagan administration, which simultaneously laid blame on the gay community and refused to put resources towards AIDS research.
