About the Item

A bright and silvery impression with warm plate tone by a female icon of the Union Square group. New York: Associated American Artists, 1943. Etching on cream wove paper, 5 7/8 x 3 7/8 inches (150 x 98 mm), full margins. Signed and numbered "XV/XXV" in pencil, lower margin. From the edition of 25 printed by Stephen Sholinky, with his blindstamp appearing in the lower right sheet corner. A brilliant, bright and well inked impression, in excellent condition. [Teller 31] A member of the Union Square group, Isabel Bishop was a contemporary and colleague of other New York-based Associated American Artists luminaries such as Reginald Marsh, Armin Landeck, Raphael Soyer, and Yasuo Kuniyoshi. Bound by their masterful use of light and shadow, the Union Square group typifies the moody, menacing and joyful images that were born from the post industrial landscape of pre-WWII Manhattan and its environs. Unlike some of her contemporaries who were drawn in by landscape, Bishop focused her attention on the beauty and complexity of people partaking in their everyday activities; virtually all of her subject matter in printmaking is figural.
