Misty Iris Triptych (3 hand-printed botanical cyanotypes, 24 x 18 in. each)

2023

About the Item

This set of three grayish-green Japanese-inspired monotypes was made using fresh-cut long-stemmed wild iris (iris douglasiana) that grow along the California coast. Their impossibly long stems bend with their own weight, creating beautiful arcs and lines in this gray and white composition. Although they resemble woodcuts or screen prints, they are actually made using a form of 19th-century photography, a cyanotype. This pale blue-gray is a very difficult color to achieve with the cyanotype antique photographic process. The normal color of a cyanotype (blueprint) is dark blue and white. However, these neutral muted gray cyanotypes were made by altering the ratio of two photo chemicals in the mix before brushing it on the paper. Every one of the artist's botanical cyanotypes is an entirely unique monotype as the freshly cut plants are laid in that one exact composition only once before they wilt. There is no copper plate; there is no ink or printing press. A long time is spent arranging the perfectly balanced composition before the paper is exposed to light and the plants' silhouettes are permanently etched. NOTE: These are the SAME three 24 x 18 inch individual Misty Iris cyanotypes listed individually. it is not possible to buy this set of 3 AND one of the separately listed "Misty Iris I"," Misty Iris II", or "Misty Iris III" prints. If you want all three, purchase the triptych here and decrease carbon emissions while also saving the artist hours spent packaging and shipping expense. The middle panel is one shade darker than the left and right panels. Unframed. **Once matted and framed in 30 x 24 inch frames, they will span 6 1/2 feet with 3 inch gaps between them. A good width for above sofa. Depictions of the artwork framed are simply to give a sense of the scale. Part of a series of 3 iris monotypes the same size and color sold separately. Hand-printed on cotton watercolor paper with straight edges, not deckled edges. SHIPPING: Free regular ground shipping to United States.

Artwork shipped carefully rolled and packaged in a tube. WHAT IS A CYANOTYPE? The cyanotype (a.k.a. sun-print) process is one of the oldest in the history of photography, dating back to the 1840's. Cyanotypes were then made famous by Anna Atkins, considered the first female photographer. Inspired by nature, we feel the need to look back at a craft that is handmade, analogue, and using an all-natural light source: the sun. Our cyanotypes are made by coating high-quality Italian watercolor paper with a light-sensitive emulsion. We then expose it in direct sunlight for several minutes using a photo negative to get the best image quality. Finally, the print is washed and fixed with water to stop the reaction and prevent fading. What you get is an amazing, royal blue image...
