Lorna Simpson
Van Der See Prop Vase

1993

About the Item

Lorna Simpson (b. 1960) is an American artist renowned as a pioneer of conceptual photography. Her artwork explores the interplay between historical memory, culture, and African-American identity. Her work frequently confronts how race and gender shape human interactions and experiences. The artist's distinctive style revolves around the use, and frequent combination, of photography and text. "Reclining Nude" is part of Simpson's series "9 Props," a body of work that prompts viewers to reconsider the conventional boundaries of the portraiture genre. The black and white photograph features a vase with a broad, round base that tapers into a trumpet-like opening. Remarkably Simpson had the 9 vessels specifically fabricated, to produce the series. Click here to learn more about her practice including this body of work in a recent New York Times article. Text below the image details the aesthetic qualities of a portrait by James Van Der See, a prominent figure in the Harlem Renaissance. While the text appears to describe Van Der See's subject, a young Black woman in a sensual pose, the application of this description to the vase creates a unique juxtaposition, serving as a rich inquiry into representation across race, gender, and art. It also raises questions about objectification of the black female body. In 2007, Simpson's work was the subject of a major retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York). Fittingly this work can be found in the Whitney Musuem's permanent collection. Her work is represented in prestigious collections across the globe including the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago); the Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), and Haus der Kunst (Munich), amongst others. Charles Pachter (b. 1942) is one of the most collected and cherished Canadian artists. His iconic, uplifting, and patriotic images have independently earned their place in the nation's museums and the Canadian art canon. The barn, along with Queen Elizabeth and the Moose, forms a triad of icons that Charles Pachter has repeatedly visited over the course of his career. Playful and a touch irreverent, Pachter's charming imagery presents a new narrative on Canadiana. The artist’s vast body of work includes painting, sculpture, printmaking, and drawing. Pachter’s works are widely sought-after and are an ideal selection for starting or continuing a collection of 20th-century Canadian art. Pachter's confident colors, sharp lines, and graphic qualities are instantly recognizable and continue to be a mainstay throughout his oeuvre. Here with an image of the classic TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) streetcars, this work epitomizes Pacther’s version of Canadian Pop Art...

By Zhiyong Jing
Located in Draper, UT
"Expectation" Edition of only 100 prints. Signed and Numbered by the artist in pencil 13/100. Born in 1982, Jing Zhiyong's creative work was predominantly inspired by the 1990s. A collective of artists working in the United Kingdom, who came to be known as the YBAs, or Young British Artists, defined the artistic culture of the 1990s. Affiliated loosely by their age and nationality, they were a varied collective of practitioners. A number of the YBAs attended the Royal College of Art and Goldsmiths in London, and were favoured by the ‘super collector’ of the time, Charles Saatchi. The most renowned member of the group is Damien Hirst, and other members included Chris Ofili, Tracey Emin, Marc Quinn, Gavin Turk, Sarah Lucas...
