About the Item
Eugène Marioton (1857-1933), "Phoebe," bronze sculpture signed "E. Marioton sc." and "Salon de Beaux-Arts." Presented at the 1889 Salon to enthusiastic acclaim, this sculpture testifies to the exceptional craftsmanship of its creator.
With a refined double patina, which enhances its fine details and gives the sculpture considerable depth, the bronze rests gracefully on an elegant pink marble base, decorated with brass feet, which lend a noble touch to the whole. The work's title, finely carved in marble and gilded with pure gold, underscores the care given to every element of this exceptional piece.
Although this model has been reproduced in several copies, the quality of finish and execution make this sculpture a rare work and a valuable testimony to the artistic savoir-faire of the late 19th century.
Phoebe or Phoebe: "the resplendent one," is the Titaness "with the golden tiara," as Hesiod would say; Wife of Ceno, she kept her place in heaven after the Titans' revolt. Phoebe was the Titaness of Light, later associated with Selene, the moon goddess. She was also the Titaness of prophecies, particularly of the Delphic oracle. She was the third goddess to deal with it, after Gaia and Temi. Aeschylus, in the introduction to the Eumenides, has Pythia herself state that Phoebe was in control of this oracle, which she transmitted to Apollo as a birthday present.
Eugène Marioton, born April 7, 1857, in Paris, is a French sculptor working primarily in bronze. His works follow the traditions of neoclassicism, representing small cast bronze sculptures of French historical leaders and personalities from ancient Greece and Rome. He regularly participated in the Société des Artistes Français and served on the jury for the sculpture section of the salon in 1905. Before his death in 1933, Marioton received several awards for his work, including a prize from the Société des Beaux-Arts and a scholarship for young artists from the Conseil Général de la Seine in 1884.
