This sculpture is part of the Primary Forms series. If body forms are the primary influence of the artist’s creative process, the creation of the artwork is also motivated by a desire to satisfy a dynamic requirement that contrasts the sculpture’s stillness. Concern for accuracy and precision lead the artist’s hands to seek a continual aesthetic improvement.
Martine Demal aspires to create sculptures that are dense yet light at the same time, sculptures that combine power and strength, using the magic of traditional bronze craftsmanship combined with elegance of form and proportion. She search for balance in almost fragile forms and proportions, taking full advantage of the possibilities that bronze offers her, despite its weight and density.

Martine Demal
With her contemporary sculptures, Martine Demal explores the different possibilities of bronze, pushing her chosen material to its limits while embarking on a journey of more than several decades toward self-realization and reflection.
Born in 1948, Demal graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1970. The French artist's career began in graphic design and ceramics. However, she discovered a passion for sculpting after meeting celebrated French sculptor Louis Derbré. Derbré invited Demal to become his student, but she declined, insisting she had to find her own style.
Inspired by the human body, Demal initially worked with live models. “In a human body, you have a landscape, a painting, a volume; you have everything,” she said. As her sculpting process evolved, Demal’s human sculptures transformed from figurative to more abstract forms.
From her workshop and atelier in Ivry-sur-Seine in the southeastern suburbs of Paris, Demal continues to challenge herself, seeking to create bronze sculptures that represent power and strength and materialize as blocky, dense forms as well as slender human figures. The interplay of shadow and light is a recurring theme in her abstract and figurative sculptures such as In Line (1994), The Passage (1997) and Writing is a Journey (2018).
Demal regularly exhibits her works in solo and group shows in France and throughout Europe and has won numerous awards. These include the Louis Derbré Prize, the Jacqueline Thome-Patenôtre Prize, a medal awarded by the town of Garches and the Pierre Gianadda Foundation Award, presented by the Académie des Beaux-Arts — Institut de France.

Pisapia's "Expedition Series," inspired by sea voyages, is about meeting life’s challenges with courage and purpose. It connects to the idea expressed by J.W. Goethe: “Character is formed in the stormy billows of the world.” Taking up life’s tasks can require one to go against the wind. The feeling of determination to achieve and continue steering through obstacles is poured into the pure forms; a dynamic balancing of the straight and curve on different axes. "With a rounded starting point," Pisapia explains, "I add on a variety of disparate angles, diverse curves, and twisting planes. I carve and smooth the surfaces, bringing out particular tensions and transitions."
Flavius Valone Pisapia is an Italian-Romanian artist born in Bucharest in 1981. He completed his higher education in the UK, with an MA in Transpersonal Arts & Therapy, 2014; a Diploma in Transformative Arts, 2011; and a BA (Hons) in Film and Video, 2005. Pisapia studied sculpture throughout his higher education and appreciated several sculptor mentors in the UK. Since 2016, he has resided in India, where he is currently an artist in residence at Studio Sukriti in Jaipur. He has had several solo exhibitions in India and his artwork is found in private collections worldwide.
