Clay Sculpture in Pre-Colombian Style Reproduction

1960s

About the Item

This work is made out of ceramic terracotta and is in a Pre-Columbian style. It is a reproduction of sculptures typically found in the Colima culture in western Mexico. These original sculptures usually date from around 300 BCE through 300 CE. The horn on the head of the figure indicates this may be someone from the priestly class. The figure has small engraved marks around the body that indicate details and textures that could have been part of the priest's ceremonial clothing. Sculptural details on the priest's shoulders also indicate that the individual wore some type of six-petalled collar. There is a great deal of detail in the face of the figure, including piercings in the ears. The color chosen by the artist of this piece ranges from a dark brown and black to a brighter red.
