Jean-Robert Ipoustéguy was a French sculptor and draughtsman, born at Dun-sur-Meuse. He studied painting in Paris at evening courses in the studio of Robert Lesbounit in 1938. Ipoustéguy's artwork had a distinct style, combining abstract elements with the human figure, often in the écorché style of French anatomists. After making abstract sculptures of a crystalline structure c.1955, his forms became lumpier and more organic, with allusions to armour and the human figure, prehistory, space exploration, etc. Since 1963 his work has included life-size, rather Surrealistic figures, sometimes interpenetrating with their surroundings or as it were crushed by them, in a violent or erotic way.

Jean-Robert Ipoustéguy
Born Jean Robert in Dun-sur-Meuse, France, Ipoustéguy moved to Paris in 1938, studying under Robert Lesbounit. Initially a painter, he transitioned to sculpture in 1949, establishing a studio in Choisy-le-Roi. Known for his bold and expressive figures, his work often explored themes of sexuality, birth, decay, and resurrection, blending human forms with abstract elements. Internationally acclaimed, he won the Bright Prize at the 1964 Venice Biennale and the Grand National Prize for Art in 1977. He was knighted in the Légion d'Honneur in 1984. His works are housed in major collections worldwide. Ipoustéguy passed away in 2006 in his hometown.
