Les couleurs de la terre is the first joint exhibition by artist duo Hélène et son mari, composed of ceramist Hélène Chouinard and multidisciplinary artist Jean-Robert Drouillard. Conceived as an expression of a decade of dialoguing creative practices, the exhibition explores the formation and transmission of artisanal knowledge by presenting finely-crafted objects in a contemporary light.
Hélène Chouinard’s works extend from her recent material research on clay colouring techniques. She methodically mixes two to three base pigments in various proportions, adding these directly to the clay to create a desired tone. Once molded and baked, this tone permeates the resulting object, not just its surface. Fascinated by the formal range of vessels from the mundane to the sophisticated, Chouinard reproduces everyday glass bottles by molding them in coloured porcelain. Each bottle bears...

Bonnie Seeman grew up in Miami, Florida with a propensity towards anatomy illustration and the dazzling colors and rich foliage of the Miami landscape. Developing her technique with porcelain and glass, Seeman channeled her inspirations; resulting in vessels that are both beautiful and macabre. Combinations of muscular and skeletal anatomy and plant forms are the makeup of these sculptural utilitarian vessels. Instead of dwelling on dying, Seeman’s palpable forms culminate in an acute awareness and awe toward life, renewal, nature, and vitality.
Shortly after completing her master’s degree in Fine Arts, Seeman was recognized by Galeria OMR in Mexico City, a gallery known for its cutting-edge artists. In effect, Seeman’s porcelain was taken out of the craft context and placed in exhibitions such as ARCO in Madrid, FIAC in Paris, and Art Basel. She shows extensively throughout the United States and was recipient of the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation 2005 Biennial Competition Award.

“I approach making with a childlike spirit of experimentation and exploration. My work stems from a love of the wood fired ceramic surface, particularly how it evokes many beautiful natural phenomena. Like imagining the way wind gathers and deposits leaves on a landscape according to changes in topography, I anticipate the manner in which ash will collect differently on the convex and concave surfaces of my gestural forms. Small’s work includes porcelain figurines and lace-like steel chandeliers inspired by branches and twigs he has documented during his travels. While in China, Small’s porcelain forms developed as visual communicators, in a culture where he didn’t speak the language. Like tattoos, Small’s glaze imagery of colorful Chinese trucks, buses, traditional motifs, nature and ornament float on the skin of his two primary porcelain forms, Talk Bubbles and Ghosts. Small’s steel chandeliers contain echoes of the opulent past of the 17th & 18th century, but have been set free of function and the restraint of tradition. Constructed of filigreed steel cut by computer controlled machines, the chandeliers are composed of “fins” of metal lace, hinged around a central axis. Small’s chandeliers are suspended sculptures that question the origins of ornamental habits. Major stylistic revolutions such as Bauhaus or Pop demolish definitions and use of ornament, but many old habits slip through the cracks.

Developing her technique with porcelain and glass, Seeman channeled this inspiration; the resulting vessels are beautiful and macabre combinations of anatomical parts and plant forms. Often the utilitarian vessels open to reveal her trademark dichotomy between outward beauty and visceral illness. Instead of dwelling on dying, Seeman’s palpable forms culminate in an acute awareness and awe toward life, nature, and vitality. Shortly after completing her master’s degree in Fine Arts, Seeman was recognized by Galeria OMR in Mexico City, a gallery known for it conceptual, cutting-edge artists. In effect, Seeman’s porcelain was taken out of the craft context and placed in art exhibitions such as ARCO in Madrid, FIAC in Paris, and Art Basel. She shows extensively throughout the United States and was recipient of the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation 2005 Biennial Competition Award.
