STREET ART STYLE

Street art is a style created for city walls, subway trains and other public spaces. Sometimes it is commissioned, yet most often it is an individual statement of defiant free expression. Although mostly an urban style, street art can be found all over the world, including JR’s pasted portraits on the separation wall in Palestine, Invader’s playful ceramic tile mosaics in Paris and the provocative stencil and spray-paint works by Banksy in London.

The Philadelphia-based Cornbread — aka Darryl McCray — is considered the first modern graffiti artist. He began tagging his name around the city in the 1960s. Graffiti art later flourished in New York City in the 1970s. There, young artists used spray paint and markers to create tags and large-scale graphic works, with Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring both developing their distinctive styles through the graffiti scene, which would evolve into street art. Artists such as Tracy 168 and Lady Pink pioneered the Wild Style of complex graffiti writing in the 1980s, pushing the movement forward.

Because of its unsanctioned, improvisational and frequently covert nature, street art involves a range of techniques and aesthetics. Some street artists use quick and effective stenciling, whereas others wheat-paste posters, commandeer video projectors or freehand draw elaborate illustrations and murals. Shepard Fairey made his mark with street art stickers before designing the iconic “Hope” poster for Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign.

While the origins of street art are rooted in a strictly noncommercial creative act that confronted political issues, sexuality and more for a general audience of passersby, the art form has moved inside the galleries over the years. Today, just as Basquiat and Haring took their works from Manhattan’s Lower East Side alleyways into Soho galleries, artists including KAWS, Barry McGee and Osgemeos are in demand with collectors of fine art.

Warm Leaf
By Alex Yanes
Located in Philadelphia, PA
This is an original sculpture collaboration by artists Dennis McNett (also known as Wolfbat) and Alex Yanes from their "Good Medicine" exhibition at Paradigm Gallery + Studio in Philadelphia, PA, USA. This sculpture series marks the first time the two artists have ever worked collaboratively. PRESS RELEASE // Paradigm Gallery is pleased to present "Good Medicine", an exhibition featuring sculptural works in wood by Dennis McNett and Alex Yanes. New individual works by the artists will be displayed alongside pieces that have been created collaboratively between their studios. The show considers the concept of positive energy and how moods, situations, or experiences can be shaped by the presence of a strong force for good, while focusing broadly on the many ways that spirituality is practiced and explored in contemporary culture. Symbols, totems, and signs in a range of sizes are hand-carved and crafted from wood, resin, and acrylic to manifest the uplifting theme behind the works in three dimensions. "Good Medicine" will be on view through July 21, 2018. Both artists have practices that revolve around ideas of tradition, personal and communal narratives, nostalgia, and heritage. They express these themes in a blended style of neo-pop and folk art, drawing on their proximity to the subculture of skateboarding. With bold graphic elements and intricate detailing, the wooden sculptures, carvings, and installations portray a deeply personal and self-reflexive approach to art-making and craft, inviting the viewer to contemplate one’s quest for self-actualization through the assemblages. Dennis McNett is known for his large-scale woodcut sculptures that fuse relief printmaking with traditional wood carving. Steeped in domestic and international mythologies, McNett often receives the seeds of concepts for pieces through meditation and his spiritual practice that he then renders in his wood carvings, wood-cut panels, and prints. Over 15 works will be on display in "Good Medicine"– including "Big Mary’s Resurrection", an example of McNett’s dedication to clearing areas of bad energy left behind by past events. Also on view will be a new Owl Spirit sculpture series and collaged panels. His birds of prey and Norse images exist in high-contrast, with alternating deep and shallow black marks that delineate swaths of colored or natural wood surfaces. Alex Yanes constructs his surreal layered, textural sculptures from wood, epoxy resin, acrylic and spray enamel. The combination of materials gives his work a subtle gloss, with clean colors and polish. All Yanes’s 7 works in "Good Medicine", including a large wall installation, are brand new and showcase his signature pop graphics. The postmodern mashups reference funhouse aesthetics, with a nod to comics, cartoons, and vintage typography...

Raymond Pettibon Santa Monica 1999 (announcement)
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Raymond Pettibon Santa Monica, CA 1999: Rare vintage Raymond Pettibon illustrated announcement card published on the occasion of: “Works By: Pettibon, Kelly, Goldin, Holzer:” November 3 thru December 1 1999: IKON, LTD./Kay Richards Contemporary Art: Santa Monica, California. Medium: offset printed announcement card. 1999. Approx Dimensions: 4 x 5.25 inches Very good overall vintage condition; unsigned from an edition of unknown. Raymond Pettibon is a contemporary American artist known for his stylized ink drawings combining images and text. His inventive narratives blend historical content with consumer culture to yield incisive critiques of contemporary society. “I was making my work as transparent as possible, without equivocations, without calling attention to itself, without apology,” he explained. “There's a lot of conventions in the art world that are not to be transgressed, but my economy of means doesn't abide by those strictures.” Born Raymond Ginn on June 16, 1957 in Tucson, AZ, the artist is self-taught, but cites drawings by William Blake, Edward Hopper, Francisco Goya, and John Sloan as instructive to his practice. Deriving inspiration from comics, cartoons, and other pop culture iconography, Pettibon began designing album covers and ephemera for his brother’s band Black Flag in the mid-1970s. He went on to produce cover art for Sonic Youth, the Minutemen, and the Foo Fighters. In 2017, the artist was the subject of the major retrospective “Raymond Pettibon: A Pen of All Work,” held at the New Museum in New York, where he currently lives and works. Today, his works can be found in the collections of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Tate Gallery in London, among others. Located in New York, NY
Stephen Powers Invest in Love, 2019 5 Color screenprint on 335 GSM Coventry rag paper Hand signed and numbered 9/50 by Stephen Powers with his distinctive hat logo on the front 14 × 8 1/2 inches Unframed "Invest in Love" was created by the renowned street artist Stephen Powers in 2020 to celebrate the artist's return to his hometown of Philadelphia in December 2019 to transform an empty building into a screen-printing pop-up shop to raise funds for a non-profit arts charity Mural Arts. The building at 1201 Spring Garden Street operated for many years as a bank. (see photograph of Powers' painted mural "Invest in Love"). Powers has exhibited in streets, galleries and museums all over the world. About Stephen Powers A Fulbright scholar who has been awarded many public commissions and exhibited in major institutions like the Brooklyn Museum.... Born and raised in Philadelphia’s Overbrook neighborhood, Stephen Powers (b. 1968, Philadelphia) moved to New York in 1994, where he gained attention as the publisher of On the Go magazine and the author of the graffiti history The Art of Getting Over. In 1997, Powers undertook an ambitious and far-reaching graffiti campaign of his own, using the official-sounding acronym ESPO (Exterior Surface Painting Outreach) to deflect attention from the illegality of his activities. By 1999, he had covered dozens of storefront grates with giant silver block lettering. Powers gave up street graffiti the following year to concentrate on studio-based projects. Powers’s work typically fuses word and image in paintings and graphics that evoke the bright look of a handmade bodega and fairground...
