Anastasia Samoylova Color Photography
Russian, b. 1984
Anastasia Samoylova is rapidly becoming one of the most impactful photographic voices of her generation. Her "FloodZone" series depicted the impact of rising sea levels, and has been exhibited widely. Her current series "IMAGE CITIES" explores how large-scale photographic imagery has increasingly surpassed architecture as the defining feature of city spaces. In her earlier "Breakfast with . . ." series, she playfully pays tribute to iconic photographers who "join her" for the first meal of the day.
Samoylova was born in Moscow in 1984, where she earned a Master’s degree in Environmental Design from Russian State University for the Humanities in 2007. She moved to the US in 2008 and received an MFA from Bradley University in 2011. She now lives and works in Miami and in New York City. Her photography has been featured in solo exhibitions at museums and galleries around the world, including the Chrysler Museum in Virginia and the Eastman Museum in Rochester, in 2022; the HistoryMiami Museum and the Multimedia Art Museum Moscow in 2021; and in 2020, at the Contemporary Art Museum in Tampa and the Print Center in Philadelphia, Her work is also included in a growing number of public and private collections. In 2021, she was granted the first-ever KBr Photo Award for "IMAGE CITIES," a project that is ongoing and will encompass a number of European cities, thanks to the award.
Her "FloodZone" project was published in a widely-praised book by Steidl in 2019. In 2022, Steidl has published a second book – "Floridas: Anastasia Samoylova and Walker Evans," with an essay by David Campany.to

“Art Shay’s photography shakes you up, sets you down gently, pats you on the head and then kicks you in the ass.” Roger Ebert “[Shay’s work] ranks with some of the greats of the 20th century.” Ellen & Richard Sandor, Renowned photo collectors “I’ve admired Art Shay’s work for almost forty years, and he keeps getting better. He can do anything with a camera, but what he mostly does is capture real moments and transform them into visual poetry. His work continues to be an inspiration to me.” William Friedkin, Director of French Connection “Art Shay is one of our finest photographers. His work over the past fifty years has artfully captured the beauty, humor, and pathos of America.” Studs Terkel “Art Shay is one of the best photojournalists I know. I’ve been a fan of his work since the early 1950s - before the launch of playboy magazine.” Hugh Hefner “Algren, Terkel, Royko, they gave us a voice.
