Dux of Sweden More Furniture and Collectibles

Swedish

Today, Swedish manufacturer DUX’s most popular furniture lines — as well as the furnishings created by its first president, Folke Ohlsson — are synonymous with the work that vintage mid-century modern design obsessives love. Also important, the brand is known for some of the most commonplace means of furniture shipping and production in the modern era.

In Sweden, Studio Ljungs Industrier AB is the large family-owned parent company of Duxiana (in America, DUX). Initially a purveyor of bedding that is today celebrated for its ergonomically guided designs, Ljungs Industrier was founded by entrepreneur (and chocolate maker) Efraim Ljung in 1926. In 1950, Folke Ohlsson, then leading Ljungs Industrier’s design team, decamped to the States to explore how he could expand DUX’s business, which at that point included a wide range of furniture. Ohlsson established a DUX office not long after he arrived in California, first in San Francisco and later in Burlingame.

On the West Coast, the booming postwar American market was eager to embrace DUX’s affordable and practical bedroom furnishings, tables, armchairs and other seating. Characterized by sleek walnut and teak frames and low-slung silhouettes, the brand’s designs were emblematic of a generation of Scandinavian modernism that had gained popularity owing to visionaries such as product designer and architect Greta Magnusson-Grossman, who arrived in California from Sweden a decade prior to Ohlsson, and Finn Juhl, who created a Danish modern line for Michigan’s Baker Furniture Company in 1951.

DUX frequently collaborated with top-tier furniture design talent — among them Bruno Mathsson, Edward Wormley and Alf Svensson, a chief designer in the Malmö, Sweden, office of Ljungs Industrier — expanding the brand’s portfolio and establishing credibility as a design source. Ohlsson’s own designs, such as his comfortable leather lounges and wool-upholstered reclining rocking chairs, continue to be among the brand’s most desirable — and most imitated — however.

In 1949, DUX put into practice an idea that Ohlsson patented for the so-called “knock-down,” or “KD,” chair, a term referencing easy, flat-pack assembly. It saved DUX space in warehouses and money on transportation and was a concept that would provide inspiration to hundreds of subsequent companies — most notably fellow Swedish brand IKEA.

Today, vintage DUX sofas and dining chairs are valuable collector’s items. Find this coveted seating and other authentic DUX furniture on 1stDibs.

Questions About Dux of Sweden More Furniture and Collectibles
  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 14, 2024
Royal Dux doesn't have a meaning. It is a shortened name for the company Duxer Porzellanmanufaktur. A member of the Czech Porcelain Group, Royal Dux has produced its brand of figural and decorative porcelain works since 1853. Model expert Eduard Eichler established the company in Duchov, Bohemia, in 1860 and ran Royal Dux Bohemia until his death in 1887, recreating historical designs from England, Denmark and France. At the start of the 20th century, the company enjoyed remarkable success thanks to the work of the designer Alois Hampel. The company enjoyed a renaissance in 1958 owing to the display of Jaroslav Ježek's collection at the World Exhibition in Brussels that year. In 1992, the Duchov factory rebranded itself as Royal Dux. On 1stDibs, find a selection of Royal Dux porcelain.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
The creation of Royal Dux porcelain figures began in 1860 in Bohemia. Now a part of the modern Czech Republic, Royal Dux figures are still made and are beloved by collectors worldwide. Shop a collection of antique and contemporary Royal Dux porcelain from some of the world's top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 3, 2024

  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Royal Dux Bohemia is a stamp found on the bottom of some pieces of porcelain produced during the 19th century. It refers to the company that produced it, Royal Dux, and the workshop's location, Bohemia, a region in what is now the Czech Republic. Find a collection of Royal Dux porcelain on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 24, 2024
Yes, pieces made by Royal Dux may be worth something. Based in the Czech Republic, the porcelain company manufactures figurines, vases and other ceramics and objects in neoclassical and Art Nouveau styles. Some of the company’s most popular pieces include the Bohemia centerpiece as well as its Elephant figurine. How much Royal Dux porcelain is worth depends on its type, style, age, rarity, condition and other characteristics. More common pieces sell for around $100, while the rarest and most highly sought-after items may sell for thousands. A certified appraiser or knowledgeable antique dealer can provide an estimated value for any Royal Dux pieces you own. On 1stDibs, find a variety of Royal Dux porcelain.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
No, Rorstrand was made in Sweden and was considered one of Sweden’s oldest porcelain manufacturers, founded in 1726. Unfortunately, the company decided to close down their manufacturing plants in Sweden and move them to Hungary and Sri Lanka. The old factory is a Rorstrand museum today and owned by Fiskars. Shop a collection of authentic Rorstrand porcelain from some of the world’s top boutiques on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 16, 2024
Whether IKEA is made in Sweden varies. The furniture maker does produce many of its pieces in Sweden. However, it also operates factories in other countries, including China, Poland, Italy and Germany. Shop a range of IKEA furniture from some of the world's top sellers on 1stDibs.
