Philippe Jacq Still-life Paintings
French
Philippe JACQ , was born in 1971. He lives and works in the South of France.
He hold a Bachelor of Arts degree and created a number of experimental films as a self-taught artist.
His artwork that received the most attention is undoubtedly the series where he produced the portraits of different artists all over the world with his super 8 camera. The series were mentioned in numerous publications, like «les Cahiers du Cinéma», but also in an anthology of avant-garde and experimental cinema entitled « dure et pure», edited by La Cinémathèque Française.
In this impressive gallery of portraits there are for example visual artists : Louise Bourgeois, Jannis
Kounellis, Gilbert & George… filmmakers : Aki Kaurismaki, Paul Morrissey, Gérard Malanga and also rock legends like Nick Cave and Patti Smith.
He put aside his cameras in 2001 and now entirely focuses on sculpture, painting and textile, a daily, exuberant and solitary routine work.
His work has been exhibited regularly in different art galleries and art centers.
Some of his artworks are part of public collections, at the Modern Art Museum in Luxembourg
(Musée d’Art Moderne), and part of different FRAC centers (Fonds Régionaux d’Art Contemporain) in France.)
“I like losing myself in major European capitals, with high immigrant populations, from Paris’ Chinatown to London’s East End or Kreutzberg in Berlin. There are so many places that inspire me. Our societies are multi-ethnic, multi-faith, and my paintings are expression of this. I use codes, and universal symbols, I mix them together, without censorship, without worrying about protagonism and communitarianism. Above all my universe is syncretic. Like a spider, I patiently weave a complex network of forms and words, delimiting pictoral zones, spaces, tracing rhizomes between East and West, Europe, where I live and Africa, where I was born.
The wire seals the memory and tightens the arc.” Philippe Jacq
“I use several techniques to make my paintings. I often combine painting, sewing and even embroidery. I gather fabrics, papers, any kind of image and pattern that allow me to develop my little universe. A world with animals, insects, mythological characters, industrial machines, temples…” Philippe Jacqto

Julia Adams comments: I use a variety of mixed media to produce my work – household glosses, spray paints, acrylics, inks and various printing techniques, rarely using a paintbrush! I like to apply paint with real freedom and spontaneity to produce paintings that have energy and depth, exploring my passion for surface quality, colour, texture and tactility.” “My series of ‘Interior Spaces’ paintings have been very popular and are constantly evolving. As a starting point I use a found image or one of my own photographs, adding or removing elements as I feel necessary to enhance the composition. I then start to play with my materials, constantly adding and subtracting. I will often include abstract stencilling to add a sense of drama, and introduce rivets to add further interest. I also enjoy including text, whether stencilled or found words in magazines.

"Sprats" Dutch Still-Life Painting of Sprats, Fish
By Sasja Wagenaar
Located in Utrecht, NL
When you look at this painting "Sprats" by Dutch artist Sasja Wagenaar (1959) from a distance you see a perfectly painted image, but up close a flowing movement of the paint streaks is visible.
Sasja Wagenaar has a unique way of applying shadow and light effects in her paintings. The strong reflection on the dark background is a reference to the camera obscura. This dark room was used since the 16th century by Old Masters (such as Vermeer, as is presumed) to create a detailed reflection of an object.
Sasja Wagenaar is inspired by our classic masters from the seventeenth century, a flourishing period in Dutch painting. The century in which new continents, markets and arts were discovered. At that time in the Netherlands it was a real fad to collect chinoiserie. Originally porcelain, but also Dutch pottery, also known as Delft blue, inspired by Chinese and especially by Japanese bowls and vases.
To quote Sasja Wagenaar: ‘Every platter, every bowl is already so much in itself. They were made with great care through hundreds of hands before they ended up here. Their character must be respected in composing the story that forms a still life. They are as alive as the blossom branches and I try to let them speak together. Slowly the image is created’.
Although rooted in the 17th century Dutch tradition, her work shows her very own signature and is contemporary. As a true Modern Dutch Master...
