Gerhard Richter was born in 1932 in Dresden, Germany. Throughout his career, Richter has negotiated the frontier between photography and painting, captivated by the way in which these two seemingly opposing practices speak to and challenge one another. From exuberant canvases rendered with a squeegee and acerbic color charts to paintings of photographic detail and close-ups of a single brushstroke, Richter moves effortlessly between the two mediums, reveling in the complexity of their relationship, while never asserting one above the other.
Richter’s life traces the defining moments of twentieth-century history and his work reverberates with the trauma of National Socialism and the Holocaust. In the wake of the Second World War, Richter trained in a Socialist Realist style sanctioned by East Germany’s Communist government. When he defected to West Germany in 1961, a month before the Berlin Wall was erected, Richter left his entire artistic oeuvre up to that point behind. From 1961 to 1964—alongside Blinky Palermo and Sigmar Polke—Richter studied at the Staatliche Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he began to explore the material, conceptual, and historical implications of painting without ideological restraint.
Richter’s earliest paintings in Düsseldorf, stimulated by a fascination with current affairs and popular culture, responded to images from magazines and newspaper cuttings. Through the 1960s, Richter continued to address found and media images of subjects such as military jets, portraits, and aerial photographs. An irrepressible and unforgettable gift. These anatomically correct, signed vintage gold plated earrings of figures dangling from a replica of a U.S. penny by public sculptor Tom Otterness are real collectors items. Although the edition is unnumbered, the artist has stated that approx 200 were created. The artist has also confirmed to us that these earrings were originally made as gifts to close personal friends and associates, so he did not sell them on the open market and did not make them again after the initial group. They are quite rare and desirable. In 2013, these works sold at Phillips auction house for US $2,750.
Wonderful, racy conversation pieces. Wearable art which would also look terrific framed hanging in a small shadow box.
About Tom Otterness:
Tom Otterness was born in Wichita, Kansas in 1952. He came to New York City in 1970 to study at the Arts Students League, and in 1973 took part in the Whitney Independent Study Program. In 1977 he became a member of Collaborative Projects, a pioneering community of independent artists, and took a leading role in organizing Colab’s 1980 Times Square Show, which was called “the first avant-garde art show of the ‘80s” by the Village Voice. Otterness is one of a handful of contemporary artists invited to design a balloon for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, for which he devised a tumbling Humpty-Dumpty in 2005. Otterness lives and works in New York.
Otterness may well be “the world’s best public sculptor,” as the art critic Ken Johnson opined in the New York Times in 2002. Public art is his focus, and Otterness has had major outdoor exhibitions of his sculptures on the Park Avenue Mall in New York (2003), in more than a dozen sites in downtown Indianapolis (2005), on the grounds of the Beverly Hills city hall (2005-06) and throughout Grand Rapids, Michigan (2006). His first solo exhibition, held at Brooke Alexander Gallery in New York in 1983, featured elements of The New World (1991), a white plaster frieze of 250 nude “Ur-people,” as essayist Hayden Herrera called them, eventually destined for the plaza of the Edward R. Roybal Federal Building in Los Angeles, a General Services Administration commission.
In the U.S., Otterness has completed at least three dozen public commissions, including Life Underground (2004), his celebrated multi-figural bronze sculpture installation for the New York Metropolitan Transportation Agency at the 14th Street station on the Eighth Avenue subway lines. His international commissions include public plazas in Münster, Germany (1993), Toronto, Canada (2007), and Seoul, South Korea (2010), and a large public park in Scheveningen, the Netherlands (2004). In 2013, Creation Myth, a gateway park for the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, N.Y., was dedicated.
Otterness has exhibited his work at John Berggruen Gallery in San Francisco, and other important contemporary art galleries. His most recent exhibition, Metal on Paper: Silverpoint, Copperpoint & Steelpoint Drawings, opened at Marlborough in September 2015. Works by Otterness are included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Guggenheim Museum, the Eli Broad Family Foundation, the Brooklyn Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Carnegie Museum, the Museo Tamayo in Mexico City, the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, and others. He was elected a member of the National Academy in 1994.
Most recently, Otterness has installed The Tables from the collection of the Whitney and 50 new sculptures in niches at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, as part of the group exhibition, The Value of Food. The book and card was inscribed to Jack Haber, the Editor-in-Chief of the magazine Gentlemen's Quarterly (GQ) from 1969 to 1983. GQ was owned by Conde Nast, and Alexander Liberman, who worked for Conde Nast for 32 years, was the Editorial Director from 1962-1983. Sadly, Jack Haber would die in 1984 at the age of 45 - one of the first casualties of the AIDS crisis, which was devastating to the art and publishing industries.

About Alexander Liberman:
Considered a revolutionary Minimalist artist, Alexander Liberman produced works that predated the movement by more than a decade. Liberman, not wanting to limit himself to any one form of expression, worked to produce radically minimalist paintings and sculpture in order to illuminate his beliefs about celestial motion, the movement of the eye, as well as human sexuality. The artist’s fascination with American industrialization and modernization ultimately resulted in his widely known red steel sculptures and geometric paintings, which seem to decompose the turbulence of the time period.
Alexander Liberman was born in 1912 in Kiev, Russia. He studied first in London and then in Paris. He took courses in philosophy and mathematics at the Sorbonne and architecture at L’École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Liberman has had numerous solo exhibitions at museums such as the Jewish Museum, New York (1966); Storm King Art Center, Mountainville, NY (1970); and the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (1970). His sculpture and paintings are included in the museum collections of the Art Institute, Chicago; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; the Tate Gallery, London and many others. Additionally his public sculpture can be seen in over 40 cities around the world including Honolulu, Los Angeles, Miami, New Haven, New York, Oklahoma City and Philadelphia. Alexander Liberman died in November of 1999 at the age of 87.

This paper shopping bag with two different color offset lithographs (one on each side) was created by Frank Stella along with his longtime publisher Tyler Graphics. The work is plate signed Frank Stella on the top of each side, and each side bears the printed text, "Dayton's Salutes the Opening of Walker Art Center's New Galleries. Premiere Exhibition Selections from Tyler Graphics, 23 September '84 to 17 May '85." This elegant work, produced with the highest quality lithography by Frank Stella at Tyler Graphics, was created in a limited quantity solely for VIP collectors at that one day's event as it was a true one-off creation. Not too many of them have survived a quarter century on, and rarely in such good condition. Not too many people you know can boast that they possess a Frank Stella shopping bag.
Note that this listing is for one two sided shopping bag, each side with a different color lithograph - so it's actually two Frank Stella lithographs...

Tracey Emin has stirred controversy as well as acclaim since she rose to fame as the most highly publicized of the infamous Young British Artists. Though denounced by conservative critics at the outset, Emin’s work has attracted serious critical attention since the early 1990s for being consistently engaging, original, and startlingly direct. About the Author
Tracey Emin was born in London in 1963. Nominated for the Turner Prize in 1999 and chosen to represent Britain at the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007, Emin is also a member of the Royal Academy of Arts. The author of several books, including Strangeland, her memoir, she contributes regularly to The Independent newspaper and lives and works in London.
