About the Item

Sean Scully: Material World (Hand signed and dated by Sean Scully), 2022 Hardback monograph on Munken Lynx, 150 gsm paper (hand signed by Sean Scully) Boldly signed and dated by Sean Scully in black marker on the first front end page 11 1/2 × 9 3/4 × 3/4 inches Unframed This lavish hardback monograph [book] with no dust jacket, as issued, was published in conjunction with the exhibition "Sean Scully Material World" at the Thorvaldsens Museum, Copenhagen, from September 2, 2022 to March 5, 2023. It was, exceptionally, hand signed by Sean Scully for us at a special event at Rizzoli books in Manhattan, where he was in conversation with curator and book contributor Raphy Sarkissian. Very few people attended this event, and even fewer purchased this gorgeous book for Sean to sign after the talk - so this is indeed a very special signed copy with fine provenance. Makes a great gift! About the book: Publisher ‏ : ‎ Hatje Cantz ( November 8, 2022) Hardcover ‏ : ‎ 115 pages Publishers' Blurb: On the celebratory, exploratory materiality of Scully's abstract formalism The oeuvre of New York-based Irish painter Sean Scully (born 1945) constitutes a continuous exploration of bands and swathes of color, captivating the viewer with hazily defined edges and brushstrokes that exalt the materiality of paint and pigment. Material World provides insight into the artist's methods, which have evolved through a sustained engagement with the art historical tradition of formalism. In an in-depth essay, Raphy Sarkissian places Scully's work in dialogue with selected works of abstract and figurative, modern and premodern painting and sculpture, as well as with aesthetic theories such as those of Swiss art historian Heinrich Wölfflin. This dialogue continues in the interplay of the architecture of the Thorvaldsens Museum in Copenhagen at which this exhibition is displayed and the neoclassical sculptures that are presented alongside Scully's work. Published by Hatje Contz Verlog, Berlin and Thorvaldsens Museum; Printed by Westermann Druck Zwickou GmbH

Biography: Frank Stella (1936-) is an American artist best known for his use of geometric patterns and shapes in creating both paintings and sculptures. Arguably one of the most influential living American artists, Stella’s works utilize the formal properties of shape, color, and composition to explore non-literary narratives, as seen in his work Harrar II (1967) from the Protractor series. “Abstraction didn't have to be limited to a kind of rectilinear geometry or even a simple curve geometry. It could have a geometry that had a narrative impact. In other words, you could tell a story with the shapes,” he explained. “It wouldn't be a literal story, but the shapes and the interaction of the shapes and colors would give you a narrative sense. You could have a sense of an abstract piece flowing along and being part of an action or activity.” Born on May 12, 1936 in Malden, MA, Stella went on to study history at Princeton University before moving to New York in 1958. Having moved to the city, Stella was immersed in the heyday Abstract Expressionism, but it was the work of Jasper Johns that inspired Stella’s Black...
