Louis H Richardson [1853-1923]
American Impressionist :
Louis H. Richardson was born in New Bedford, MA, where he lived and worked until his death in 1923. Richardson was a self-taught Impressionist artist, most known for his sensitive paintings of the landscape surrounding New Bedford and the Dartmouth area. From his shanty shack studio at Salters Point in South Dartmouth, he would paint the wetlands and feature water, trees, the sky and land. In 1917, Richardson was part of a two-man show in New York City with artist Clifford W. Ashley at the Arlington Art Galleries on Madison Avenue. Of his show, The New Bedford Sunday Standard wrote: “His style is so absolutely his own that the simple mention of his name recalls to mind vividly the salt marshes, the soft browns of silent reaches near the sea, wind-blown inlets, flying clouds. … Some of it reaches a height of charm and truth that it would be impossible to surpass.” Richardson believed in the art community and founded the New Bedford Arts Club and its successor the New Bedford Fine Arts Society.
When not painting, Richardson worked at the New Bedford Water Company and later as a plumbing inspector for the city’s Board of Health. He was an avid baseball player and would be known as “the Babe Ruth of New Bedford.”
On his death, the local newspaper declared him “one of the best-known artists in New Bedford” and “one of the art pioneers in building up a more widespread appreciation of art in the community.”
His work is in the permanent collection of the New Bedford Whaling Museum...

Biography
John William Casilear was born in New York City on June 25, 1811. Like his fellow Hudson River School landscapists Asher B. Durand and John F. Kensett, he worked as an engraver before turning to painting. In 1826 Casilear was apprenticed to the engraver Peter Maverick (1780-1831), and at first he primarily executed bank notes. Durand encouraged him to attempt other subjects, however, and during the 1830s he madeengravings after some of the most prominent paintings of the day, including Daniel Huntington's The Sybil (New-York Historical Society). In 1832 he began submitting engravings to the National Academy of Design exhibition and he first showed paintings there in 1836. In 1833 Casilear was elected an Associate of the Academy; he was elevated to full Academician status in 1851.
In 1840 Casilear accompanied Durand, Kensett, and another painter, Thomas P. Rossiter (1818-1871), on a trip to Europe. There the artists studied and copied paintings...

Born in Havelock, New Zealand on April 11, 1878, George Thompson Pritchard studied in Auckland, New Zealand at the Academy of Art, at the Elam School of Art, and at the Melbourne Academy of Fine Arts in 1901. Upon arriving in San Francisco in 1906 in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake and fire, he produced many paintings during his three-year stay in the city. He then spent a few years in Milwaukee before journeying on to Paris for further art study at Académie Julian, and at the Vanderheldt Academy in Amsterdam from 1911 to 1914. Born in downtown Manhattan in 1934 Robert Dash was home schooled for most of his young life due to ongoing illnesses. Never formally studying painting, he developed a strong interest in the abstract expressionists, particularly De Kooning, in college. He attended the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, in part to escape the city.
After college he spent a year in Italy and upon returning to New York City worked for Arts and then Art News, while painting at night. He had his first show in 1960. Recently lightly cleaned and gold leaf frame custom made for the painting. Overall 27 by 37 inches. Some craquelure; mainly in sky. Otherwise, good condition.
A student of Dutch marine artist, Mauritz de Haas, Warren Sheppard built two successful careers around his love of the sea: marine painting and yacht designing. He was born in Greenwich, New Jersey, a town on the Delaware River below Philadelphia, which has been associated with ships and shipping since the earliest Colonial times. His father was a sea captain and the young Sheppard took many voyages with his father to make artistic studies. He learned perspective drawing at Cooper Union in New York City in addition to his studies with de Haas. In 1879, he spent four months sketching Mediterranean port cities including Gibraltar, Genoa, Naples and Messina in Sicily. Between 1888 and 1893, he also studied painting in Venice and Paris. By the time he was in his mid-thirties, he had established himself as a successful illustrator and painter. The yachts he painted were the most lavish of his day, owned by the wealthiest of men. He was an expert in the design and rigging of ships of present and earlier times. His work was highly regarded for its authenticity as well as its artistic merit.Sheppard was also an expert navigator and sailed a number of famous yachts in races. Twice he was to command Tamerlane when it won the New York to Bermuda run. His book, Practical Navigation, was used for many years by the United States Naval Academy...

Jean Leasin Hitch began her artistic career in Melbourne, Australia, under the tutelage of her father, Percy Leason, a professional painter, well-known cartoonist and illustrator. After coming to the United States in 1943, she was appointed curator of art at the Staten Island Institute of Arts and Sciences, New York. While at the museum, she also began her restoration career and restored paintings from the museum's collection and other notable historic collections.
