About the Item
Oil on canvas painting by the Russian/American artist, Nicolai Cikovsky. Signed lower left. In good unrestored condition. Housed in custom made wood and lemon gold gilt frame. Overall size 23.5 by 27 inches.
Nicolai Cikovsky was educated in Russia and came of age during a period of momentous cultural, political, and social upheaval. His early studies were undertaken in Russia at the Vilna Art School, the Penza Royal Art School, and Vkhutemas Higher Art and Technical Studies. Having departed Russia in 1923 in the aftermath of the Civil War (1917–1922), Cikovsky remade his career virtually from scratch in New York City. Painting in a semi-Cubist idiom, he exhibited at the Charles Daniel Gallery and, in the early 1930s, the Downtown Gallery and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Primarily a figure and landscape painter, Cikovsky began spending his summers in North Sea, on Long Island’s East End, in 1942, and settled in the region permanently by the early 1970s. He associated himself with regional artistic circles involving his close colleagues David Burliuk, Moses and Raphael Soyer, and Robert Gwathmey—the group dubbed the “Squiretown Circle” after the name of the street on which both Burliuk and Moses Soyer resided; their East End homes were the scenes of lively social gatherings and impromptu artistic and political debate. Cikovsky was an integral participant in the Hampton Bays Art Group, a loose association of artists who exhibited together in the region: Burliuk and the Soyers, Milton Avery, George Constant, Arshile Gorky, and others. Nicolai Cikovsky
Nicolai Cikovsky arrived in New York in 1923 with impressive academic credentials, having studied in his native Russia at the Vilna Art School, Penza Royal Art School, and Moscow Higher Technical Art Institute. He quickly gained representation with the Charles Daniels Gallery, which exhibited only the most promising modern artists. Best known for his landscapes—especially of Long Island—and figurative works, Cikovsky was lauded for his ability to infuse his canvases with mood, capturing a spirit of place. Cikovsky's works were featured—and often won prizes—in some of the most important exhibitions of the day, including the 1926 International Exhibition of Modern Art at the Brooklyn Museum, National Academy of Design and Art Institute of Chicago annuals, and the New York World's Fair. Other exhibition venues include New York's Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and Carnegie Institute, among many others. He was a member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters and the Society of Painter, Sculptors, and Engravers. In addition to his painting, Cikovsky served as an instructor at the Cincinnati Art Academy, Art Institute of Chicago, Art Students League, and Corcoran School of Art.

“Orient, Long Island”
By John Crimmins
Located in Southampton, NY
Beautiful Orient, Long Island, New York painting by well known Hampton artist, John Crimmins. Acrylic on masonite. Circa 1995. Signed lower left. Condition is excellent. The painting is housed in a a new contemporary antique silver frame 26 by 30.25 inches. Provenance: A Southampton, New York collector.
East End artist, John Crimmins was born in New York in 1963. As an American Impressionist painter, he lives in New York and he is very active in the Hamptons. Incredibly, he is self-taught, having studied the works and techniques of the prominent American artist Charles Hawthorne and living by his saying “Let Color make form”. If you view John’s paintings at close inspection you will see single spots of color silhouetted with another which not only shows his skill but his passion and intricate dedication to his work. His paintings are done 'alla prima', that in Italian means 'at first attempt', it is a painting technique, used mostly in oil painting, in which layers of wet paint are applied to previously administered layers of wet paint. With this style of painting the work is to be completed while the paint is still wet, so once started his works are finished in one session.
He is a member of the East End Arts Council and his paintings are a part of the Ken Ratner Collection and the Southold Historical Society in New York. His works were a part of the Islip Art Museum IAM Pocket sized open Call Exhibition in 2015. He is mostly known for his flag and local Hampton beach paintings...

Nahum Tschacbasov
Biography :
Russian-American artist Nahum Tschacbasov (1899-1984) is known for his cubo-surrealistic works which feature a strong psychological element. Some of his work bears a resemblance to work of another Russian-American artist--David Burliuk. He was somewhat of a late starter, moving to Paris in 1932 to study under Adolph Gottlieb, Marcel Gromaire and Fernand Leger. He had his first exhibition in Paris in 1934. He then returned to the US where he joined Rothko and Gottlieb at the Galery Seccession. He was one of the co-founders of The Ten, a group of social conscious abstract painters which included Rothko, Gottlieb, Joseph Solman and Ilya Bolotowsky, among others.
In 1944, he began to work at Stanley Hayter's Atelier 17, a center for surrealistic ideas. Between 1936 and 1943, he had five one-man exhibitions at the ACA Galleries and participated in five group shows. He also exhibited at the Whitney, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Knox Albright Museum, the Chicago Institute of Fine Art and Corcoran, among others. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Met, the Whitney, the Brooklyn Museum and the Jewish Museum.
Tschacbasov has been the subject of two recent retrospective at Fletcher Gallery, Woodstock, NY and Arthur...

Jerzy Mazur is an artist in whose work man has made a permanent home.
