Nicolai Cikovsky Art
American, Russian, 1894-1984
Nicolai Cikovsky arrived in New York in 1923 with impressive academic credentials, having studied in his native Russia at the Vilna Art School, Penza Royal Art School, and Moscow Higher Technical Art Institute. He quickly gained representation with the Charles Daniels Gallery, which exhibited only the most promising modern artists. Best known for his landscapes—especially of Long Island—and figurative works, Cikovsky was lauded for his ability to infuse his canvases with mood, capturing a spirit of place.
Cikovsky's works were featured—and often won prizes—in some of the most important exhibitions of the day, including the 1926 International Exhibition of Modern Art at the Brooklyn Museum, National Academy of Design and Art Institute of Chicago annuals, and the New York World's Fair. Other exhibition venues include New York's Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and Carnegie Institute, among many others. He was a member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters and the Society of Painter, Sculptors, and Engravers. In addition to his painting, Cikovsky served as an instructor at the Cincinnati Art Academy, Art Institute of Chicago, Art Students League, and Corcoran School of Art.(Biography provided by Lincoln Glenn)

Girl with a Lute

Located in Lawrence, NY
The well known and highly regarded landscape and figure painter Nicolai S. Cikovsky was born in Russia in 1894. He studied at the Vilna Art School, 1910-1914; the Penza Royal Art School, 1914-1918; and Moscow High Tech Art Institute, 1921-1923. Thus he came of age during a period of momentous cultural, political, and social upheaval.
In the aftermath of the civil war, he left Russia and emigrated to the United States in 1923, exhibiting in that year in New York City at the Charles Daniels Gallery and, in the early 1930s, the Downtown Gallery and the Whitney Museum of American Art. In 1942, Cikovsky began spending summers on Long Island, New York, in the North Sea area, where he moved permanently in the late 1970s.
Best known for his plein air landscapes of bucolic Hampton Bays, NY and figurative works, Cikovsky was lauded for his ability to infuse his art with feeling, capturing the spirit of a place. In Long Island he was one of the Hampton Bay Group of artists. The informally noted leader of the group was dramatic and acclaimed Blaue Reiter,Futurist- Expressionist fellow Russian artist David D. Burliuk. Emigre artists who would later be involved in the group came to America around the same time but under different circumstances. Burliuk and Cikovsky left an unhospitable Bolshevik Russia following Worl War II , arriving here in 1922 & 1923, respectively. The Soyer twins, Moses and Raphael, arrived as youngsters in 1912, fleeing Tsarist anti-Jewish persecution. John Graham (b. Ivan Dombrovski) and Arshile Gorky (formerly Vosdanig Adoian) arrived in 1920 in search of a place to make a living as artists. George Constant arrived from Greece in 1910 seeking an art education. Once in New York, these artists sought out places to exhibit their work. Ultimately, the downtown Manhattan gallery scene united them with many other artists emigre artists.
Cikovsky was a member of New York City institutions, including the National Academy of Design (Associate 1968; Academician 1970); National Institute of Arts and Letters; and Society of Painters, Sculptors, and Cikovsky’s works were exhibited & won prizes in the most important exhibitions of the day, including the Brooklyn Museum's 1926 International Exhibition of Modern Art, the National Academy of Design & Art Institute of Chicago annuals, and at the NY World’s Fair...

Trees at Bloom
By Clarence Holbrook Carter
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Trees at Bloom, 1939, oil on canvas, 32 x 24 inches, signed lower right
About the Painting
Trees at Bloom was painted when Clarence Holbrook Carter lived in Pittsburgh and served as an instructor in the Department of Painting and Design at the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie-Mellon University), a position he held from 1938 through 1944. It depicts a thick forest at the base of distance hills just outside the city. During his tenure in Pittsburgh, Carter was deeply influenced by not only the industrial might of the steel mills and iron forges of the city, but also the beauty of the surrounding landscape. As Frank Anderson Trapp noted in his book on the artist, for Carter “the terrain itself had its own special vitality, with its craggy, wooded hills threaded with ravine and watercourses . . . . the signs of industrial blight that were unalleviated in some parts of the country were there relieved by the geological variety of the parent landscape, and by the irrepressible presence of its natural growth, which softened the whole.” Trapp continues, “in his scenes of rural situations, Carter had a special gift for rendering those elements convincingly.” With the profusion of flowering trees which diffuse the light and the red cardinals darting from one branch to another, Trees at Bloom portrays the “irrepressible presence of nature” that Trapp describes.
About the Artist
Together with Charles Burchfield, Clarence Holbrook Carter was Ohio’s premiere American Scene painter and later an innovative magic realist. The son of a no-nonsense public-school administrator, Carter was born in 1904 outside of Portsmouth, Ohio, a small town in the heart of the Ohio River...

"LA CHAINE SIMPSON" by Toulouse-Lautrec from Les Maitres de l'Affiche
By Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
Located in Hinsdale, IL
TOULOUSE-LAUTREC, HENRI DE
(1864-1901)
"LA CHAINE SIMPSON"
Original lithograph from "Les Maitres de L'Affiche" series
Printed by Imprimerie Chaix, Paris
Bearing MDL stamp lower right, from issue #60, 1900. Plate #238
Unframed Size: 11 3/8 x 15 3/4”
The "Les Maitres de l'Affiche" series was offered as a subscription series to collectors every month for 60 months, from December 1895 through November 1900. The "Maitres de l'Affiche," were issued as separate numbered sheets, referred to as "plates". They were numbered, with the printers name "Imprimerie Chaix," in the margin at the bottom left hand corner, "PL.1" to "PL.240." In the margin at the bottom right hand corner of each, is a blind embossed stamp from a design of Cheret's. The smaller format and the fact the "Maitres" were a paid subscription series, allowed Imprimerie Chaix to use the latest state of the art printing techniques, not normally used in the large format posters due to cost. A very high quality of paper was used, where as the large format posters were printed on lesser quality newsprint, due to cost and a short expected life span. This explains why the quality of the printing, in the "Maitres de l'Affiche," usually far exceeds that of their larger counterparts. "In her recent excellent biography of Lautrec, Julia Frey indicates that 'Henry, the frustrated athlete, was compulsively familiar with the vocabulary and technical aspects of a variety of sports in which he could participate as a spectator: horse and bicycle racing, wrestling, yachting, bullfighting. He watched them all with the same intensity that he watched a line of dancers or a circus bareback rider, attracted by the beauty of movement, but also by the smells, sounds and excitement of the spectacle (Frey, p.353) His 'insider' knowledge of the cycling field shows up abundantly in this poster for the French agent of the Simpson bicycle chain company. In the foreground is the champion cyclist Constant Huret. In the background are Tristan Bernard, the sports impresario who was a close friend of Lautrec, with Louis Bougle, the French agent who adopted the name 'Spoke.' A touch of levity is added by what appears to be a 'bicycle-built-for-ten' in the upper-left corner, in fact it's two five-seaters, known at the time as 'quints.'"(Rennert, PAI-XXII, 35)Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec came from an aristocratic background, having been born the son of an earl.Even as a schoolboy he showed a talent for drawing. By 14 he had suffered two horse back riding accidents, combined with a serious bone disease which eventually left him crippled for life. His body continued to grow but not his legs, he would remain only five feet tall and suffer pain and embarrassment his entire life.At the age of 18, Lautrec moved to Montmartre in Paris to study art seriously. He worked with artists Louis Anquentin, Emile Bernard, Degas, Van Gogh and others. He became a frequenter of the the cafes, cabarets and brothels of the neighborhood, drawing from them inspirations for his artistic themes. As the artist's stature grew, several magazines wanted to publish his work, including Le Rire. His subjects, as well as street life, included some of the most famous music-hall performers, with whom he became friends, such as Yvette Guilbert, La Goulue Jane Avril, May Milton, May Belfort...
