Janet Calderwood Tue, Apr 23, 12:07 PM (1 day ago) to me I found this in an email from a couple of years ago - is there space on 1stDibs to include a designer's bio? I did a lot of research to distill this info: EDWARD COLONNA (b. Germany, Edouard Klonne 1862-1948) Renowned Art Nouveau furniture, jewelry and objets d’art designer and architect, EDWARD COLONNA, was German-born and raised, studied architecture in Brussels, Belgium, became an American citizen, lived in Canada for several years, and had the artistic soul of a Frenchman. Colonna was born in Muhlheim near Cologne (Koln), Germany in 1862. He studied architecture in Brussels and in 1882 he moved to the United States. There he found a position with Associated Artists...

Andre Arbus Pair of Small Benches
By André Arbus
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Pair of x-shaped small benches, French, circa 1937, by Andre Arbus. Chene ceruse. 20" wide x 16" deep x 17.5" high. Andre Arbus (1903-1969) French Art Deco Architect and Designer, ANDRE ARBUS, WAS born in Toulouse, France. A third-generation cabinetmaker, Arbus became active in the Salons of the Societe des Artistes Decorateurs and the Salon d’Automne in Paris in 1925 at the young age of 22. His work included commissions for the 1922 oceanliner Bretagne, the 1927 La Provence and Ile-de-France as well as the 1961 France. He often used rare and exotic materials in his refined designs. These were elegant and pure and often gave the appearance of fragility – as in his neo-classical presentation at the Paris International Exposition of 1937. He compared the joints in his furniture to the joints of the human hand. His commissions also included private townhouses as well as Le Mobilier National for which designed a desk for U.S. Ambassador W. H. Harriman, and the post World War II Medici Room of the Chateau de Rambouillet...

Maurice Dufrene Gilt Sculpted Vitrine
By Maurice Dufrêne
Located in Philadelphia, PA
French Early Classic Art Deco cabinet/vitrine by Maurice Dufrene, circa 1912, in gilt sculpted wood . This cabinet is pictured in Dufrène's own Hôtel Parrticulier (private residence), at 22, rue Bayard in Paris, taken in 1918 (see photo below). The lemonwood version of this cabinet was exhibited at the Salon d’Automne in 1912 and is now on permanent display at the Musee d’Orsay in Paris (see photo below). This cabinet is in original condition and a scan of the original drawing is shown here. Maurice Dufrêne (1876 - 1955) One of the premiere French designers of the 20th Century, Maurice Dufrene was born in Paris in 1876. He was educated at Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. By 1899, at the age of just 23, he became the director and manager of La Maison Moderne. This shop represented an association of artists who were working together to create designs which could be produced in multiples. Dufrene's work was first shown at salons in 1902 and from 1903 he regularly exhibited at Salon d'Automne and Salons of Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts. At the 1925 Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes (which would later give the movement "Art Deco" its name), Dufrene's designs included luxury boutiques, the living room of Une Ambassade Francaise pavilion, the music salon...

Maurice Jallot Lacquer and Verre Eglomise Coffee Table
By Maurice Jallot
Located in Philadelphia, PA
French Forties Art Deco coffee table by Maurice Jallot, circa 1947, in cream lacquer with original verre eglomise glass top and gilt bronze mounts. 40” long x 17” deep x 17” high. Pictured in Mobilier et Decoration, 1947. Maurice Jallot (1900-1971) Maurice Jallot was born in Paris during the 1900 Exposition Universelle – an auspicious beginning for a career in the arts. He studied at the Ecole Boulle in Paris and upon graduating, joined his father’s (Leon Jallot) studio in 1921. He left for a while to gain outside experience and rejoined the firm in 1930. A versatile and imaginative designer, Maurice Jallot exhibited a range of pieces and ensembles at the annual salons, some in partnership with his father and some singly. For the 1925 L'Exposition internationale des arts décoratifs et industriels modernes - the World's fair held in Paris, France, from April to October 1925 the Jallots provided furnishings for the Hotel du Collectionneur (grand salon), Ambassade Francaise, La Societe Noel, La Maison de Bretagne, and Gouffe Jeune. Their furniture in the 1920s was fabricated from woods – palisander, walnut, pearwood, amboyna, camphor. From the mid-1920s the Jallots faced the Challenge common to all woodworkers: whether to adjust to, or fight, the revolutionary introduction of glass and metal. They chose the former, introducing a distinctive range of modern furniture: stainless steel tables, mirrored cabinety, etc. Maurice participated in the interior decoration for A French Embassy...
