E. Popineau Cymbals Dancer Sculpture

About the Item

French Art Deco patinated bronze sculpture, by E. Popineau, circa 1920, cymbals dancer. Signed. Also stamped by foundry, la Stele. 36.25" high. 17" wide at hands. Francois-Emile Popineau (1887-1951) Popineau was born in 1887 in Saint Amand Montrond, Cher, France. He began using a chisel and a mallet during his teenage years, then perfected his skills in Paris. After World War I he resumed sculpting and taught at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Bourges (where he became an official Bourges Sculptor), then in Rouen. In 1921 he exhibited at the Boutique de l’Encrier in Paris; and was awarded his first gold medal at the 1925 Paris International Exhibition of Modern, Decorative and Industrial Arts (Fr: Exhibition Internationale des Arts decoratifs et industriels modernes). He also was awarded the Puvis-de-Chavannes prize for his sculpture La Baigneuse. Popineau’s sculptures are in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in Paris.
