19th Century French Square Carved Limestone Trough or Sink
Located in Dallas, TX
Stone troughs have been used to water livestock in rural Europe for many centuries so it’s often difficult to date them. However, it is known that they were replaced by cast iron models in the mid-19th century, placing the creation of this French limestone trough or sink most likely in the early- to mid-1800s. Hand-carved from one piece, the roughly rectangular stone with 3 ¼” thick walls has an interesting, striated palette, most likely indicating that the bottom of the trough was obscured from the elements. The top of the trough has a light gray appearance with areas of light green, orange, and black patina, while the lower section has a white hue with a continuation of the accumulation seen above. Two drainage holes on one side allow the trough to be used as a garden planter or the basin of a courtyard...

Antique Painted Buffet Deux Corps de Marriage, Normandy France, C. 1785
Located in Dallas, TX
Originally presented as a wedding dowry, circa 1785 (making it period Louis XVI), this wonderfully hand-carved, hand-painted deux corps is from Normandy, France. According to a centuries-old custom, French fathers would give commissioned pieces of furniture as a wedding gift to their daughters. The item would be sent to the bride’s new home, packed with her belongings. This custom is no longer popular in Europe, but pieces from the 17th and 18th centuries still exist. Generally speaking, the more intricate the carvings, the wealthier the bride’s family was, indicating that this particular bride came from a prominent family. The focal point of our deux corps de marriage is the large crest comprised of a wicker basket bouquet, located just under the arched top. Interestingly, the top of the buffet is arched, not just the crown, which is adorned with egg and dart above a deep cavetto cornice and a ring of imbricated discs that run behind the mid-relief crest. Other motifs include beading, additional bouquet medallions, crinkled ribbon bows, rosettes, Vitruvian waves, and widely spaced fluting. All of the carvings have been painted a true white, while the rest of the wood has a distinguished gray finish with blue accents that has become synonymous with painted antique furniture...

Pair of Hand Forged 18th Century Spanish Iron Torchere Candle Holders
Located in Dallas, TX
Full of charm and character, this pair of iron torchere candle holders were hand-forged in Spain during the 1700s. The visible strike marks made by the blacksmith, along with the flattened pin that affixes the highly scrolled arms add subtle nuances to the 21-inch tall candlesticks. At the end of each arm is a torch-like light sconce with a banded noix at the bottom, topped by a flat bobeche with a thin rim and a folded cylindrical capital. Rising a few inches above is a third light source with an identical bobeche and capital that extends from the central column. The three-light spread is supported by tripod bases featuring sinuous legs that have been embellished by roundels set within thin fluting. Our pair of Spanish torchere...

Weathered White Painted Belgian Cement Unicorn, Circa 1960
Located in Dallas, TX
Cast in Belgium, circa 1960, this cement unicorn features a fabulously weathered white-painted finish. Acceptable losses to the paint have revealed areas of the gray-colored stone, which have developed a black and green patination. The unicorn is depicted in a lodged manner, which is a heraldry term for a domesticated animal lying down with its head raised. A long, flowing mane runs down the nape of the neck, partially covering a bejeweled choker harness. In Europe, unicorns have been part of folklore for over 2,000 years, with people believing they existed up until the late Middle Ages. Legends stated that unicorns were impossible to capture but that their horns contained magical medicinal properties. Eventually, they came to symbolize strength and protection. Our painted Belgian...

Circa 1820 French Restauration Commode in Flame Mahogany, Gilt Bronze Hardware
Located in Dallas, TX
Topped by a one-inch thick marble top, this commode has a beautiful mahogany veneer with flame graining and foliate and floral gilt bronze hardware. Hand-carved in France, circa 1820, the stunning chest of drawers is from the Restauration period, which is the transitional era of French history following the first defeat of Napoleon. The gray marble top with white and black veining has a subtle embellishment often seen during the Restauration: rounded front corners. Directly underneath is a drawer with flared tulip molding (molding of Restauration furniture is almost always thin and delicate), with an elaborate rinceaux mount, adorned with a shell, palmettes, and a supple floral swag drop handle. The drawer is segmented into four compartments, allowing the storage of smaller items. Three tiers of taller drawers form the main body, each embellished with a volute leaf keyplate flanked by a pair of swag drop pulls. The apron is also adorned with a lovely bronze mount of a foliate margent with a center rosette that spans between a pair of half-bun feet in the front (the two back feet are blocked). A beautiful example of Restauration period furniture...

Antique Oil on Canvas Painting, Interior of an Inn with Dancing Peasants, 18th C
By David Teniers the Younger
Located in Dallas, TX
After the original 17th-century by the famed Flemish painter, David Teniers II (usually referred to as “David Teniers the Younger”, as his father David Teniers the Elder was also an accomplished painter), this fabulous painting depicts a vibrant scene, both in color and theme. Our version, which was painted in the 1700s, is by an unknown, but very talented artist. The painting is surrounded by a giltwood frame with two layers of beading. Both Teniers were known for developing the “peasant genre” or “tavern scene”, where members of the working class were shown actively celebrating life. The earthy tones of the interior of the inn (brown and beige) are offset by citizens in brightly colored attire consisting of green, red, black, and gray. The scene is divided into two rooms, with seven patrons (mostly men) gathered around a barrel table in front of a very large fireplace. Two of the men are playing cards and there are two tankards visible. The calmness of this group is a drastic difference from the 11 people gathered in the foreground. A man in blue stands on top of a wine barrel table...

Well Carved Italian Limestone Planter or Fountain Element, H-45 Inches
Located in Dallas, TX
Standing over 45 inches tall, this well-carved limestone planter or fountain element would have a commanding presence in any landscape installation. Hand-carved in Italy in two sections (the basin is separate from the column/plinth section), a central drainage hole runs through both sections, allowing it to be plumbed for a fountain, either as a spill bowl or with a vertical jet. The basin is six inches tall and has a diameter of almost 30 inches and is adorned with two layers of gadroon separated by a deep cavetto cornice. Interestingly, the bottom ring of lobes terminates beneath a large, attenuated leaf that can be seen under the basin. The beautifully carved basin is supported by an equally impressive, fluted column above a bulbous third section of gadroon. A thickly molded circular plinth with a large leaf cup offers stability and additional aesthetic appeal. The light gray stone has developed a mottled white, gold, and black patina with green and brown moss/lichen accumulation. Our Italian limestone planter could be used in a garden as an elevated planter...

Antique French Carved Stone Fountain Facade from Paris, Circa 1900
Located in Dallas, TX
A stylized depiction of the first appearance of the Greek goddess, Aphrodite, this fountain façade was hand-carved in limestone in Paris. Although there are several theories about the creation of Aphrodite, one of the most common legends is that she mysteriously arose from the Mediterranean Sea, either near Cyprus or the Greek Island of Kythira. Carved in mid-relief, the face of Aphrodite can be seen encircled by various seashells as if she were emerging from the water. Above her head is another large shell, flanked by a pair of volutes that comprise the double-arched top of the stone. Aphrodite’s mouth has been carved agape, with an opening of ¾ of an inch, allowing the façade to be paired with a basin for a cascading water fountain...
