Rare 19th Century French Doors with Capriccio Oil Painting and Chinoiserie Verso
Located in Dallas, TX
Truly a one-of-a-kind set of architecturals, these French doors feature a lovely capriccio oil painting on one side and a lacquered Chinoiserie on the verso. Dating to the 1800s, the wood frames on the front side of the doors (as seen in the main photo) have been painted true white more recently. Raised layers of molding surround a large landscape painting of ochre, brown, and gold. A protruding cornice of rounded molding adorns the frames just below the canvas, above a carved rectangular molding and raised kickplate. The capriccio (a capriccio is an architectural fantasy painting) depicts a massive, bifurcated round staircase surrounding a large outdoor fountain...

Antique French Brass Hunting Horn, "Le Cor de Chasse", Early 1900s
Located in Dallas, TX
An ancestor of modern orchestral horns, this le cor de chasse, or hunting horn, would have been carried by a member of a fox or stag hunting party known as the huntsman. Unlike orchestral horns, this brass version is valveless, relying on the skill of the huntsman to manipulate pitch through delicate adjustments of the lips. By varying the frequency of notes, as well as the pitch and duration, the huntsman would produce different signals to alert members of the hunting party or to relay commands to the hounds. Horns such as these (cor à plusieurs tours) that feature distinctive tight coils and a soldered mouthpiece were designed to be played with one hand while on horseback. Our French brass hunting horn...

Antique Italian Giltwood Trumeau Mirror with Harbor Scene Oil Painting, C. 1780
Located in Dallas, TX
This Italian trumeau mirror, hand-carved circa 1780, features a 20 ½” H x 38” W mirror set beneath a maritime oil painting. The giltwood frame has angular protrusions in the upper corner, each filled with a small, raised floret. An egg-and-dart border graces the edges of the frame, interrupted by stepped-out plinths at the bottom corners. Both the mirror pane and the painting are surrounded by bead and reel motifs. The wonderfully executed painting depicts a bustling harbor filled with vessels from three different countries. A majority of the crafts feature English flags, while there is one from the Netherlands, with the third representation being a flag from the nation of Catalonia, which would later become an autonomous state in Spain. The blue sky, filled with white fluffy clouds, provides good weather for the numerous boats and ships navigating the choppy waters. Very mountainous terrain can be seen in the background, with a white lighthouse and a blue roof on the shore. In front of the highlands is tall Romanesque architecture comprised of several niches, transoms, and bricked columns topped with flowing greenery. Several men are gathered on the shore, carrying cargo to be loaded into boats approaching the harbor. Our Italian trumeau mirror with harbor scene oil painting...

Circa 1800 French Copper 2-Handled Vase with Chariot and Cartouche
Located in Dallas, TX
Hand-worked circa 1800, this French vase is adorned with a chariot and cartouche scene. Some of the elements were hammered from the front side, in a metalworking technique known as chasing, while other motifs were worked from the verso side, which is known as repousse. It is not uncommon for the two methods to be used in tandem, and the work of this particular artisan is top notch. The 5 ¾ diameter opening is flanked by two flared out handles that terminate on the widest part of the main body. A flowing foliate margent (repousse) adorns the top of the body, beneath the lightly textured thick neck (chased). The leaf theme continues beneath a thin ring of roundels that frames the upper body, with a sprawling foliage display that wraps around the lower body, interrupted by a pair of cartouches. One scene depicts a man in a toga with a laurel wreath crown...

Unusual 18th Century Venetian Center Piece in Carved Walnut Wood, Circa 1780
Located in Dallas, TX
Although the Rococo in France (where the style originated) lasted from roughly 1725 to 1760, other countries in Europe produced period art and furniture until the late 18th century. One such country was Italy and in particular, Venice, where this unusual carved walnut centerpiece was hand-carved, circa 1780. A large shell-form bowl with volute leaf embellishments is being held by three putti emerging from an undulating base. The wave pattern is reminiscent of a foaming sea, further indicated by the stylized dolphin tails emerging from the spray. All of the tails are textured with a lozenge-patterned background, protruding as high-relief elements. On the underside, the scalloped tips of the water swing down in three areas, forming well-disguised feet. The carvings of the centerpiece are quite exceptional, given the height and breadth of the piece. A wonderful decorative accessory for any large table, our walnut Venetian centerpiece...

Large Antique French White Painted Trumeau Boiserie Mirror, Circa 1870
Located in Dallas, TX
Trumeau boiserie mirrors, such as this painted white offering from France, were designed to be placed on a wall in between two windows. The motifs and color palettes of these mirrors would often match the surrounding paneling. Based on the size (seven+ feet tall and over four and a half feet wide), our mirror would have been hung in a large room such as a salon. The inclusion of a floral latticework with canted upper corners that are topped by volute leaves indicates this mirror is in the style of the Regence Period. Also of note is the large foliate medallion that surmounts the lattice, flanked by C-scrolls that seamlessly transition into floral margents; these are traits of the Rococo style that emerged during the reign of the Regent. The shaped glass pane is surrounded by a border of beading set inside thick, protruding molding adorned with foliage. Our white trumeau mirror...

Pair of Circa 1750 Walnut Wood Entry Doors from Spain
Located in Dallas, TX
Spanish furniture and architecturals of the 18th century, such as this pair of walnut wood entry doors, were highly influenced by French stylings. Hand-carved circa 1750, the doors feature deep, sinuous moldings, reminiscent of the curvaceous motifs seen during the reign of Louis XV. The amazing doors have a rich brown patina that accentuates the charm of the carvings, which are also enhanced by the visible screws used to join the pieces of walnut wood. Comprised of five carved panels per door, each carving is similar: a rough rectangle with rounded ends and barbed counter curves. The three smaller panels are orientated horizontally, surrounding the two larger and vertically arranged panels. A thickly scrolled bronze pull can be seen on each door, also functioning as door knockers (the door on the right has commensurate wear from the pull striking the wood). Because these Spanish entry doors...
