This impressive sculpture of a nef was crafted by skilled German craftsmen in the early 20th century. Historically nefs were used to store spices and cutler on a dining table, but as their designs became more elaborate, they became purely decorative.
The hull of the piece is intricately cast with high relief depictions of cherubs, sea creatures, scrolls, and waves among many others. Various coats of arms are cast and engraved on the nef. The deck is filled with delicate vermeil figures undertaking various tasks. The wheels as well as the bow are gilt creating a superb contrast between the several tones of metals. This pair of cold-painted and patinated bronze figures were made by Alfonzo Titze, cast from models by Carl Kauba (1865-1922), who was a removed Austrian artist particularly known for his patinated bronze depictions of the Wild West.
The bronzes portray a pair of Native Americans, each one standing on a rough-hewn deep red marble base.
The first figure portrays a Native American warrior, called a brave. Leaning forward his mouth is open as if he is shouting. A small feather headdress ornaments the figure's head. Vibrant red frills are decorating parts of the trousers and shirt, an animal fur boa, as well as a yellow, blue, and white scarf covering his body.

Meissen began to produce these kinds of porcelain figures in the early 18th century, prompted by the demand for the Far Eastern ‘pagodes’ being imported into Europe at this time.
The Meissen factory in Germany was founded in 1709 and was the first producer of true porcelain wares in Europe. The company’s main patron was Augustus II the Strong, the Elector of Saxony and King of Poland. Meissen was, and continues to be, famous for its tableware, vases, candelabra, animal sculptures and figures, like this pair, which were often graceful and light-hearted in character. These models feature the Meissen mark of the two blue crossed swords on their undersides.

These excellent sculptures depict the Enlightenment philosophers Voltaire and Rousseau, and are made in the model of works by Jean-Claude-Francois Joseph Rosset (French, 1706-1786). Rousseau, the philosopher of course famous for this discourses on inequality and social justice and similar areas, is shown standing with a scroll in his right hand and a cane in his left, wearing a shirt with frills, waistcoat and frock coat. Depicting a woman and a man of similar appearance, age, dress, and in a similarly spritely, lively, and engaging manner, these figures were made by Johann Maresch in the late nineteenth century, c.1880. A skilled Austrian maker, similar in output to the more famous Friedrich Goldscheider, Maresch gave these figures a tangible vitality and energy to their representation, showing them as hard-working yet undaunted and undimmed by their labours.
