This octagonal shaped coffee table is made by the Dutch interior and furniture designer Bas van Pelt (1900-1945), and manufactured by E.M.S. Overschie. The construction is made in tubular steel with white lacquer finish. The curved ends meet each other in the middle, creating a cross shape which is the defining element. The table top is covered with coarsely woven fabric ‘sisal’.
Bastiaan Johannes van Pelt (1900-1945) was a Dutch furniture designer and interior designer. As son of a book printer, he spend his time after school working in several printing companies in Holland. At that time he already engaged in topics like designing furniture, interiors, carpets and fabrics, graphic work and pottery. One of Finland's leading designers was Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985) who made a great contribution to Scandinavian mid-century modern design of the 20th century. Born and raised in Helsinki, Wirkkala started his education at the National School of Applied Arts in the capital. Afterwards, he began his career in graphic design. At the age of twenty-five, the outbreak of the Second World War started and Wirkkala soon served the Finnish army. As the war ended in 1945, Wirkkala continued his work as a designer by joining the glass manufacturer ‘Iittala’, where he worked on numerous designs till the end of his life. Wirkkala's approach to design was highly innovative and ranged from furniture, porcelain, glass, jewelry and tableware. His talent excelled in combining organic forms into industrial manufactured designs. A striking example are his inlaid coffee tables that he designed for Asko. For this, he used laminated sheets of plywood sanded to a smooth surface that resembles an abstract leaf. It represents the main approach in his designs; a sculptural and elegant modern exterior...

Bruno Mathsson (1907-1988) was born in Sweden as the son of a cabinetmaker. His interest in architecture and furniture design developed early in his life. From his first designs on Mathsson was eager to use new, innovative techniques and soon became specialist in bending of laminated wood. In 1937, he was represented at Expo Paris where he won the Grand Prix for his bed called ‘Paris’. This Expo helped Mathsson to get known worldwide. The manager of the MoMA design department got interested in his designs and started to collect and exhibit his pieces.
