Sunset
By Greta Van Campen
Located in New Orleans, LA
Triangle with 18 inch sides Greta Van Campen is known for her geometric hard-edged graphic approach to representation. She has traveled across the United States sourcing inspiration from the landscapes, small towns, and cities. Now, with a young family, she gets most of her inspiration close to home. Scenic ocean views and paintings of flowers from her gardens make up the bulk of her new work. She paints in her home studio, beginning each piece with a photograph she has taken. She uses the photo as a reference while drawing from memories of her experiences, sometimes also working from sketches done on location. The image is translated into a painting by first setting large compositional elements and then finding shapes and masking off areas with tape, mixing the desired color of paint, and continuing to tape and paint until the desired amount of detail is reached. This distilled and stylized approach imbues her traditional subject matter with a freshness and modernity. As Van Campen explains, she “figure(s) out how to recreate a version of the natural, atmospheric place by turning it into a more geometric, color and balance-driven scene that is hopefully appealing, interesting, and authentic.” Van Campen was born in and resides in Maine. She received her BFA from Bowdoin College, ME. She is represented by Octavia Art Gallery, LA & TX, and Dowling Walsh Gallery...

Appalachian Dawn
By Kurt Herrmann
Located in New Orleans, LA
Kurt Herrmann’s paintings explore his fascination with the language of color and the power it evokes universally and subjectively. To Herrmann, it is not necessarily about the color, but rather how the viewer feels in response to a particular color. His Color Bomb paintings are a sort of playground or vessel for colors to interact and resonate in a similar way to how music is heard. In this new body of work, Herrmann’s visual vocabulary shifts as elements from the Appalachian Mountains (where he resides) begin to emerge, such as the landscape, animals, seasons, and even sounds. Kurt Herrmann resides in the mountains of Lock Haven, PA and obtained a BFA from Lock Haven University. His works have been in exhibitions around the world and most recently at Penny Contemporary, AU; Traffic Jam Galleries, AU; Hells Kitchen Gallery / Tiny Tree, AU; James Oliver Gallery, PA; 12 Gallery, NZ; and Sidewinder Gallery, IL. Herrmann has also shown at art fairs including the Affordable Art Fair, Singapore; The Other Art Fair, AU; and Scope Miami Beach, FL. His work has been featured in Time Out Chicago and the Philadelphia Inquirer. Herrmann’s paintings are included in the collections at the Hotel Del Coronado...

By Otto Neumann
Located in New Orleans, LA
Otto Neumann (1895-1975) was a German Expressionist painter and printmaker. His monotypes evolved from sharp, angular, black and whites to late abstract prints in a variety of colors. Neumann lived through revolutionary changes in the art world of prewar and postwar Germany. He was a prolific artist in Germany during a time of the country’s unprecedented academic and intellectual growth. His early work shows the influence of both French masters like Cezanne and the contemporary style that was then being developed by German Expressionists like Kirchner. A master printmaker, Neumann was also inspired by the works of Albrecht Durer, whose allegorical subject-matter and unmatched drawing technique Neumann would emulate throughout his career. A lifetime preoccupation with the human figure informs his work, with frieze-like human figures recalling ancient Greek art...

Wing Boot
By Fritz Bultman
Located in New Orleans, LA
Fritz Bultman (1919-1985) was an American Abstract Expressionist painter, sculptor, and collagist and a member of the New York School of artists. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and moved to Germany to join the Bauhaus at the age of 16. There, he was acquainted with Maria Hofmann, the wife of Hans Hofmann, which initiated a move to New York to study under his guidance. Bultman set himself apart from other Abstract Expressionists with his meticulously organized abstract compositions, use of sculpture, and the adoption of collage as a core practice. In 1950, Fritz Bultman and 27 other distinguished artists signed a letter protesting the conservative nature of the work selected for a forthcoming national exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The signees of this historic letter were identified as, the “Irascibles,” resulting in the majority achieving international acclaim as Abstract Expressionist artists including Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko, among others. Throughout his life Fritz Bultman received several awards including Fulbright and Guggenheim Fellowships and was a founding member of the Long Point...
