Pairpoint Glass Co. Poppy Flower Stained Glass Table Lamp, Vienna Shade, 1920
By Pairpoint Glassworks
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Pairpoint Glass Co. Poppy flower stained glass table lamp, Vienna shade, 1920. Obverse-painted and enameled glass shade in "Vienna" style, patinated silver plate base. Color and size of floral gives this antique a preternatural freshness and modern feel. Note the sinuous elegance of the base and the gentle manner in which the frame branches up to hold the shade before continuing upward to connect to each blossom. Masterfully designed work. Stamped manufacturer's mark to base 'Pairpoint MFG Co...

Estelle & Erwine Laverne Originals Modern Rosewood Lamp Table Floor White 1950s
By Erwine & Estelle Laverne
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Estelle and Erwine Laverne for Laverne originals - Tulip base rosewood lamp table floor lamp. Maker’s mark on underside. Extremely rare example of a piece by E & E Laverne that includes wood of any sort (rosewood) alongside the non-traditional materials for which they are most known. I cannot underscore how exceptionally rare this piece is within the Estelle and Erwine’s oeuvre. It most probably dates from the between the years 1960-1961, as the weighted tulip base is reminiscent of their Champagne chair and the central table evocative of their cafe table that was a part of the Lily collection of the late 1950’s.
Dimensions: H 43.5 inches, W 11.75 inches, D 11.75 inches.
‘The Invisibles” by Elaine M. Salkaln (from the April 18, 2004 New York Times)
On the surface, this is a simple design story of a husband-and-wife team, Estelle and Erwine Laverne, who produced exceptionally beautiful, innovative midcentury-modern wallpapers, fabrics and furniture -- designs that are rare today, yet coveted by a few specialized dealers and aficionados.
But the story goes deeper -- to a convergence of culture, class, art and love. Sadly, though, the love gets caught up in the grittier details, transforming what would have been a grand romance into a modern American tragedy.
Were this a docudrama, it would begin with a scene from the filming of the sci-fi fantasy ''Men in Black II'': in the center of a glass-walled, ultramodern, living room swarming with cameramen, lighting and booms, a little dog jumps up and down on the seat of a tall, sensuously sculptured clear acrylic chair...

Matchless Wonder Star #910 Double Row Amber & Blue Crystal C-9 Holiday Bulb 1936
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Matchless Wonder Star #910 Double Row Amber & Blue Crystal C-9 Holiday Bulb, 1936. Extremely rare early crystal production in the rarely seen Amber points with blue sapphire center.
On May 2, 1935 Paul C. Dittman of Chicago filed an application for a patent for what he called simply "Decorative Lighting Device". In the patent he described it as "an ornamental device embodying a multiplicity of of prismatic light diffusing bodies with a light source..."
He related that while he was aware that others had patented lighted stars, his offering was different in that the light would enter the rays of the star radially, effectively refracting the light within the ray and producing a "pleasing effect."
His description of the refracted light produced by the stars was a bit of an understatement, as anyone who has seen them illuminated can attest: a lighted Matchless Wonder Star is stunningly beautiful. His patent was granted on December 8, 1936.
Paul Dittman, a German immigrant who passed through the gates of Ellis Island in New York City, worked for a time for George Westinghouse, where he got an education in the manufacturing of electric light bulbs. In 1912, Paul and his partners started the Matchless Electric Company, which was later incorporated (in 1918) "to manufacture, buy, sell and deal in electric supplies, light bulbs and radio tubes..." By 1930, the direction of the Company had changed a bit, and it was re-named The Century Lamp and Tube Company to reflect the fact that it was by this time the largest single licensee for the manufacture of RCA radio...

By 1930, the direction of the Company had changed a bit, and it was re-named The Century Lamp and Tube Company to reflect the fact that it was by this time the largest single licensee for the manufacture of RCA radio tubes. In addition to the tubes, the Company produced a large variety of small light bulbs, mainly miniature lamps that were used as indicators in telephone switch boards and various control panels, and automobile lamps as well. These lamps, an example of which is pictured below, are round, miniature based style with outside painted colors. These was even a Matchless brand set of Christmas lights available, which was a typical series string of eight cone shaped lamps.
In 1929, Mr. Dittman was the principle stockholder of a company incorporated as the D-G Electric Company, whose business was "to deal in all kinds and descriptions of electrical devices..." By 1931, the Company was renamed The Matchless Electric Company, and in 1934 the Century Lamp and Tube Company was dissolved.
The Matchless Electric Company of Chicago, Illinois made and sold these glass-prismed Christmas lights starting in about 1935, and continuing through the late 40s.The production of the Stars was a seasonal business for The Matchless Company, but Jim Dittman, inventor Paul's son, reports that the Stars were "my father's pride and joy." They were available in several sizes and many color combinations, and the glass points were made and hand cut in Czechoslovakia...

Marbro Oxblood Elephant-handled Chinese Urn Table Lamp Sangre de Boeuf Regency
By The Marbro Lamp Company
Located in Brooklyn, NY
The Marbro company was founded by Morris Markoff and his brother, hence the name "Marbro" from Markoff brothers. They started the company shortly after WWII. The company was located in a 3 story brick building in the garment district of Los Angeles, just south of Downtown right by the Santa Monica Freeway. During the time they ran the company, they sold almost as many antiques as they did lamps.
Marbro sold their products mainly through interior designers and a few upscale furniture stores. Most of the products were built to order. A typical order from a designer or retailer took between 75 and 90 days to complete.
Most of the components that made up the lamp bodies (ceramic, brass, glass, etc) were purchased from small companies and antique dealers around the world. For the most part, none of the bodies were made on site. . Italy was the source for alabaster, Japan and China for Porcelain, Brass in India and Crystal from Germany and France. Lamps would also be made from sculptures that customers brought to in to the shop.
Once the lamp bodies arrived, a group of Marbro employees would make the wood bases, spin the metal caps, make the shades, and do the painting and tinting. With the help of about 20-40 other true world class artisans, metal workers, finishers and handmade shade makers, they produced lamps and shades that were truly some of last of their kind of art.
Here we have an astonishing example of Marbro production. This mid to late 18th century lusciously oxblood lacquered "sang de boeuf" Chinese urn was almost certainly a custom commission by a client, the owner of the Qing urn. The exceptional quality of the urn, it's size, gentle proportions, the even application of the oxblood glaze (especially over the stunning elephant handles) are of a quality that I have not seen before in a lamp.
The Marbro artisans truly did right by their client, as they allowed the exceptional form and color of the Chinese antique take center stage. The simple base follows the proportion of the body yet perfectly echoes the angle and curve of the elephant trunk handles.
Victorian lampshade...

Frederic Weinberg Bucking Zebra Table Lamp Set, Midcentury, Signed
By Frederic Weinberg
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Extremely rare bucking zebra plaster table lamps by iconic midcentury Philadelphia based designer - Frederic Weinberg. With manufacturers label. These are the real deal.
Philadelphia based artist and Industrial designer Frederic Weinberg produced and sold a wide variety of striking decorative and functional pieces items under a company bearing his name.
More then 50 years after ceasing production, Weinberg’s designs remain as fresh and vital as ever. His extremely stylized figures and masterfully playful use of line and negative space to convey form are an absolute delight.
Very little else is known about the man and his company. The majority of pieces attributed to him lack his signature / label. His table lamps and horse figures are thought to be earlier productions, circa 1946-1950, and marked examples are extremely rare and highly coveted.
