A cockfight is a sport between two roosters (cocks), or more accurately gamecocks, held in a ring called a cockpit. The history of raising fowl for fighting goes back 6,000 years. The first documented use of the word gamecock, denoting use of the cock as to a “game”, a sport,pastime or entertainment, was recorded in 1646, after the term “cock of the game” used by George Wilson, in the earliest known book on the sport of cockfighting in The Commendation of Cocks and Cock Fighting in 1607. This is a lovely antique Victorian silver plated casket bearing the makers mark of the renowned silversmiths, Walker and Hall, Circa 1840 in date.
The square casket freatures an epic mythological scene of the four seasons with eight winged cherubs on the lid.
Each side features the four seasons: spring features a bull and a goddess, summer has a lion and a goddess, autumn has a scorpion and a goddess and winter has a cherub and goddess.
The interior of the box features its original quilted buttoned silk upholstery.

The decorative sculpture of silvered cast-bronze features a naked Diana the Huntress, with bow and a pair of hunting dogs, standing on a sloping naturalistic base raised on a rectangular black marble plinth.
This high-quality hot cast solid bronze was produced using the traditional "lost wax" process, otherwise known as the "cire perdue" method.
This is a splendid bronze sculpture and it will no doubt become the centrepiece of your collection.

Josef Lorenzl (1 September 1892 – 15 August 1950) was an Austrian sculptor and ceramicist of the Art Deco period.
While at the Vienna Arsenal, Lorenzl produced many bronze and chryselephantine sculptures, and captivated by the female form he became famed for his shapely dancing girls with long, elegant legs and closed eyes. These pieces of his were signed "Enzl", "Lor", "R. Lor", "Renz" or "Renzl". Occasionally the name "Crejo" appears on his pieces, Crejo having been a painter and one of Lorenzl's friends, and who sometimes applied colour to the pieces. These joint works are sought-after items. The large majority of Lorenzl's figurines were attached to Brazilian green onyx plinths.
Lorenzl's talents also extended to being a gifted ceramicist. He produced pieces for Goldscheider, working from a studio on company grounds. As with his chryselephantine pieces, his ceramic works were in great demand and became the embodiment of the Art Déco period. Famous amongst these is "The Butterfly Girl" after the famous dancer Niddy Impekoven...

This is a lovely antique Swiss 8 airs Gonçalo Alves cylinder music box, manufactured by Qualite Excelsior Sondrite Extra Puissant Harmonie, circa 1870 in date.
The Goncalo Alves case is inlaid and crossbanded with boxwood inlay and superb marquetry decoration of musical instruments. It is raised on a plinth base and is fitted with brass carrying handles.
The music box features a 28cm cylinder playing eight tunes with arrow and adjustable lyre damper, with handwritten "Tremolo a Zither" play sheet and makers plate for Qualite Excelsior Sondrite Extra Puissant Harmonie.

This is a handsome pair of antique Victorian mahogany and leather club armchairs, circa 1880 in date.
This lovely pair was made from masterly crafted hand-carved solid mahogany with an interesting hand-carved crest of a bird on top of each.
They have been reupholstered in a sumptuous chocolate brown leather with button backs and stand on their original brass and porcelain castors.

Mahogany
is probably one of the largest ‘families’ of hardwood, having many different varieties within its own species.
Mahogany has been used for centuries in ship building, house building, furniture making etc and is the core structure of just about every 19th century vanity box, dressing case or jewelry box. It became more of a Victorian trend to dress mahogany with these decorative veneers, such as burr walnut and coromandel, so that the actual mahogany was almost hidden from view.
Mahogany itself is a rich reddish brown wood that can range from being plain in appearance to something that is so vibrant, figured and almost three dimensional in effect.
Although mahogany was most often used in its solid form, it also provided some beautifully figured varieties of veneer like ‘flame’ mahogany and ‘fiddleback’ mahogany (named after its preferred use in the manufacture of fine musical instruments).
Cuban mahogany was so sought after, that by the late 1850s, this particular variety became all but extinct.

Each with a beautiful hand carved cresting rail, the backs, seats and arms upholstered in sumptuous leather, the arms on spindle supports and on turned front legs terminating in the original brass castors.
The brown leather is truly striking and in excellent condition, these armchairs are of a quality that would be very difficult to find today and the solid walnut has wonderful hand carved decoration.
