James Deakin & Sons LTD
DEAKINS (SILVERSMITHS) LTD
Sheffield
The firm was established in 1865 by James Deakin at Sidney Works, Matilda Street, Sheffield. Before 1886 he was joined in partnership by his three sons, William Pitchford, John and Albert and the style of the firm was changed to James Deakin & Sons. In 1888 they opened London offices and showrooms at 48 Holborn Viaduct. Other branches were opened at Glasgow and Belfast. In 1897 the firm was converted to James Deakin & Sons Ltd.
In 1935, James Deakin & Sons Ltd was part of a short-lived merger "Silver & Steelcrafts Ltd" that included Fenton Bros and J.H. Potter & Sons. The combine collapsed within three years. In 1939 was created Deakins (Silversmiths) Ltd, active at 6 Earl Street and, from 1943 at Sidney Works, Matilda Street. They were liquidated in 1967.
In 1961 the brand was part of the "MONOGRAM" CUTLERY GROUP belonging to I.S. Dearden & Sons Ltd. manufacturing holloware and flatware under the "Bell brand" in the patterns 'Gordon', 'Balmoral' and 'Empire'.

Andrew Fogelberg
His name suggests a Swedish origin and possibly arrival in this country already trained as a goldsmith. First appears in London as plateworker, Church Street, Soho, in the Parl. Report 1773. His mark alone was therefore presumably entered in the missing register a little before this. Second mark entered as a plateworker, in partnership with Stephen Gilbert, July 1780. Address: 29 Church Street, St Anne's Soho. Heal records the partnership at this address until 1793.; also, Fogelberg alone till 1800.
There is however some confusion with the mark of Alexandra Field which may have led to false assumption to the length of his career. Either alone or with Gilbert his productions show an elegant, restrained classicism, particularly in his speciality of the use of small cameo...

The upper section features a moulded cornice above a secret bulge front frieze drawer, this is above a hinged fall front clad in burr walnut-figured book veneers framed in broad cross-banded borders edged with feather-banding.
The interior housing three pairs of pigeon holes concealing secret compartments above a central cupboard flanked by three side drawers on each side with six further drawers below, all clad in burr figured veneers edged with feather banding and fitted with brass pendant handles. The rear of the central cupboard is a concealed panel that sildes away to reveal four further secret drawers.
The base of the chest comprises two half-width drawers above two full width drawers, all fitted with pendant shaped brass drop handles, The cabinet is raised on bracket feet.
The walnut secretaire is outlined throughout with decorative herringbone stringing.
Complete with working locks and original keys.

This is a superb antique George III inlaid flame mahogany serpentine sideboard, circa 1790 in date.
With wood banding and marquetry spandrels, the central frieze drawer flanked by deep drawers, the right side drawer with divisions for bottles. The drawers fitted with the original and beautiful ormolu lion's head ring handles.
It is raised on elegant square tapering legs on spade feet and is complete with working locks and key.
Add an elegant touch to a special place in your home with this superb antique serpentine shaped sideboard.
The botanical name for the mahogany this item is made of is Swietenia macrophylla and this type of mahogany is not subject to CITES regulation.

A large vintage decorative Rolls Royce silvered bronze sculpture, The Spirit of Ecstasy, dating from the mid 20th century.
The winged maiden was designed by Charles Robinson Sykes (1875-1950), and she stands on an attractive round black marble plinth base.
In 1910 Rolls-Royce slowly became aware that some owners were affixing 'inappropriate' ornaments to their cars. Claude Johnson's brief to Sykes was to sculpt a mascot for Rolls Royce that embodied 'speed with silence, absence of vibration, the mysterious harnessing of great energy and a beautiful living organism of superb grace' to become the standard emblem of the Rolls-Royce brand and it was Sykes' daughter, Jo (born 1908) that believed it was on the road from London to Beaulieu that her father first became 'Very impressed with the smoothness and speed of the Rolls Royce car.... imagining that even so delicate a thing as a fairy could ride on the bonnet without losing her balance.'
In early 1911 Sykes' presented his mascot, entitled "The Spirit of Speed", to Rolls-Royce. This figurine had her arms outstretched behind her and her gaze firmly fixed forward. She was soon retitled "The Spirit of Ecstasy" by Johnson and became the official symbol of Rolls-Royce automobiles on 6th February 1911.
It is a striking piece thought to be a former Rolls Royce car showroom sculpture.

The Spirit of Ecstasy is the bonnet ornament on Rolls-Royce cars. It is in the form of a woman leaning forwards with her arms outstretched behind and above her. Billowing cloth runs from her arms to her back, resembling wings.
The Spirit of Ecstasy, also called "Emily", "Silver Lady" or "Flying Lady", was designed by English sculptor Charles Robinson Sykes and carries with it a story about secret passion between John Walter Edward Douglas-Scott-Montagu, (second Baron Montagu of Beaulieu after 1905, a pioneer of the automobile movement, and editor of The Car Illustrated magazine from 1902) and the model for the emblem, Eleanor Velasco Thornton. Eleanor (also known as Thorn) was the secretary of John Walter, who fell in love with her in 1902 when she worked for him on the aforesaid motoring magazine. Their secret love was to remain hidden, limited to their circle of friends, for more than a decade. The reason for the secrecy was Eleanor's impoverished social and economic status, which was an obstacle to their love. On the other hand, Montagu was married to Lady Cecil Victoria Constance Kerr since 1889.
Eleanor died on 30 December 1915 when the SS Persia was torpedoed by a U-boat south of Crete. She had been accompanying Lord Montagu who had been directed to assume a command in India. He was thought to have been killed too, but survived and was saved after several days adrift in a life raft...
