"A window is a poetic medium for people to communicate with nature," says artist Wenjie Jin. The glass pane develops into a picture frame upon looking through it from a fresh perspective. Each window plays a specific role in its own story that reflects the colorful hearts of people. Wenjie taps into the spiritual aspect of light being the principal starting point of creation.

She implements aspects of modern and abstract styles in beautifully refined sequences of color. "You may encounter heart-touching moments, including beautiful poetry, surreal dreams, and exquisitely carved structures," says Wenjie. Her work creates a powerful sensory resonance that goes beyond words. Growing up in rural China, she discovered her love for painting and hoped to change her life's path with the paintbrush. Wenjie's creativity led her to pursue jewelry design and, through earnest efforts, became a successful international artisan. She migrated to the United States as an outstanding talent yet faced challenges from the language barrier. Rediscovering painting became her earnest way of self-expression and spiritual tranquility. Wenjie immerses herself in inspiration by taking reference photographs and conclusively translating the material at her well-kept garage studio in Arcadia, California. A celebration of life persists as the central theme of her optimistic message. Apart from being a full-time artist, Wenjie devotes her time to being a wife and a mother, taking care of her family and making them as loving and warm as possible.

Longing to create something that connects with people, Cosbie spent countless years perfecting how he portrays the world on canvas. Within his journey, he studied as an apprentice in the studios of Sam Black and Jack Shadbolt. As a plein air artist, Doug's studio is a portable pochade box. He begins by finding a location that speaks to him, makes a sketch, and continues to add depth and dimension with oil on canvas. "Creativity when making art is not about interpreting exactly as you see it. New ideas are formed by interesting contrasts, and interesting paintings happen when things are out of place." In the rare cases when he is not painting, you can find him reading, traveling, sailing, and spending quality time with his family. Cosbie's creations have been showcased at galleries in Canada. He is an alumnus of Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Artist Faye Vander Veer depicts a cozy rainy evening in the city. "You can almost hear the sound of the tires as the traffic moves along the wet pavement," says Faye. Drizzly street scenes are among her favorite subjects to portray. She paints reflected headlights and other ambient lighting to give a feeling of warmth and calm.

Artist Faye Vander Veer seeks out moments with engaging narratives and captures them with an impressionist style. Her dramatic use of color, texture, light and shadow lend a glowing quality, creating an energy all their own. While using her own photographs as a general reference, it is her sensory memory of the event and her emotional reaction that is conveyed on the canvas, causing the viewer to be transported to another time and place. “Painting becomes a language I use to express my emotional response to what is before me and share my experience of the subject with others,“ says Faye.

"Everyday life is caught in a moment," says Brian. "Arriving home, or getting ready to leave home. A lazy afternoon." Just the type of subject Brian loves to paint.

About the Artist
Artist Brian McCarty paints idyllic landscapes and bucolic architecture. “Growing up in rural New Jersey, I’ve always found old houses, barns, and the countryside interesting subjects,” says Brian. Influenced by his mom who was a self-taught artist and art teacher, she encouraged Brian to pursue anything artistic. After graduating from Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art and earning his BA in Art from Thomas Edison State College, he worked professionally as a graphic designer in New York for the largest publishing houses in the country. A career that spanned thirty-six years. Brian has done comedy and sketch writing with the Groundling Theater, and worked in a few major feature films as an actor. To begin his process, Brian takes photos of his references with an iPad, crops the images to his liking, and paints directly on his canvas with a quick oil wash. Recently returning to painting full time, he converted a room in his house into a working studio. “I get lots of natural light, and listen to music and podcasts while I paint.”

Having a full-time job and being a wife and mother, Yangzi makes a habit of painting everyday to keep her passion exciting and fresh. She keeps a queue of ideas and reference photos that she takes throughout the year. She looks through her references, tweaks and adds elements to them. Once inspiration strikes, Yangzi draws several sketches and begins to work with oils on canvas on multiple pieces at once - to keep each painting spontaneous and new. "I try to capture the paradox of life in the city, where one can be in a crowd and yet feel alone," Yangzi says. "My main intent is not to capture the physical reality of a scene, but to express my own moods and feelings to my audience." In her free time, Yangzi enjoys reading, with her current favorite genres being biographies and memoirs. Yangzi is an alumnus of DePaul University in Chicago.

This work is from Doug's painting trip to Bodie, California. He worked to show the rolling clouds, late day shadows and burnished color emblematic of the arid, hot day. Part of Doug's signature series of plein air paintings, capturing the character and enduring beauty of the rural American landscape. He says he loves working outdoors, where all of his senses are engaged. "It is a very creative environment, as you have to work quickly as nature changes," Doug explains. "I ignore what I don't want so the confusion of shapes and colors are reduced to the essentials. The key is to modify or even eliminate objects, as it's rare you will ever find ready-made compositions."
