The painting was inspired by a series of flower borders in the Oxford Botanic Gardens known as the Merton Borders, a natural planting, with sustainability in mind, the species are able to withstand high temperatures and low rainfall. The borders are a riotous profusion of pink, yellow and purple flowers.
Last image shows a diptych - The other works is sold but commissions are available. This was the left hand panel of a bright jazzy pair of paintings intended to form a diptych - see Red Hot Border II which formed the right hand panel. The paintings may be hung separately or side by side as shown in the insitu image.

“Hush” is part of my Tapestry series of semi abstract paintings that explore the simplification of shape, space, colour and texture in places I have visited. Some of these are specific to landscapes around my studio in Surrey, the South Downs and Devon but mostly they are a visual amalgamation of experiences, like a patchwork of memories and feelings from one or many places. Tapestry-like landscapes with bold mono-tone blocks which reflect the shadowy-shape of evergreen trees against more open hills and meadows. I see more when I’m not focused on the detail, painting intuitively with a mix of acrylics, inks, chalk and oil pastels to capture an emotive response to a place rather than the reality of a specific landscape. Brush strokes and marks are layered and carved with fluid lines that create imagined dream-like patterns. “Hush” is painted on a wood panel with muted shades of slate, moss, pebble and shell, contrasted with a bold graphic swathe of charcoal.

Adele Riley is a British contemporary land and seascape artist working primarily in acrylic and acrylic inks. Her artistic process usually begins with a loose idea of what she wants to create. She strives to capture the emotional content of the subject, letting the inks create a type of chaos by doing what they naturally want to do. ‘This is an exciting part of the process,’ says Adele, ‘As it always reveals something magical, letting me know what I should do or how I should react next.’ Adele is fascinated by light and colour, believing people connect to colour just as much as to the subject matter. People are drawn to different energies in different colours, and she loves to play with this theory in her work. She often starts her paintings ‘plein air’, sometimes in local forests or on the beaches of Cornwall and Devon, but her passion is to paint intuitively, recalling the light, atmosphere, sounds and feel of a scene. ‘My aim is to capture the essence of a place rather than produce a literal interpretation. Jon Rowland – The emotional response to the subject of the ‘Tree of Life’ was a focus was on paint and feeling. Strong colours and the free flow of form breaking out from what seems like constraining structures are the result. To categorise it as landscape or still life is not what this painting is about.
