About the Item

Discover more original artwork by Janet Keith with Wychwood Art online and in our gallery. The colours used in the painting – particularly the rich, glowing orange and hints of green are inspired by colour combinations in Indian miniature paintings – they are bright, punchy and very warm. The shapes perhaps suggest architecture – maybe palaces in the desert radiating heat from old walls after a day of hot sun ? The painting is not intended to depict any specific thing or place but rather to suggest an atmosphere or mood. Janet Keith is a contemporary painter based in the U.K. Her painting is a response to the visual excitement and beauty of her surroundings. Her artistic roots are in outdoor painting, working directly from life. However, that rich experience now informs a more abstract and mostly studio based approach to painting – which has become an exploration of how spontaneous gesture and considered pictorial structure weave together in building an expressive painting. Janet works in an unplanned, improvisational and intuitive way – with one mark or colour opening possibilities for the next. Sometimes this results in an entirely abstract image. Often the painting echoes the very rural surroundings of her studio and influences from travels near and far. Janet comments, "…I am so often surprised to have made a painting which I could never have imagined or planned in advance. I like to think that in painting I am releasing some ‘joie de vivre’ and reflecting back into the world some of the wonder I find there…" Janet has Degrees in both the History of Art and Painting. She exhibits regularly in the UK and has paintings in private collections in the UK, USA, Switzerland, Belgium, Germany and Australia. Artist and painter Henry Walsh comments “My work begins with snapshots of busy city life and by a process of elimination I refocus the image on elements that encapsulate a sober thoughtfulness." "Scattered throughout the hustle and bustle of concrete life, like pools among the rocks, are the parks and squares that provide us with a place to breathe and a time to think. It is a fundamental need of a sane society to be able to stop once in a while and wander from the routine, lift our heads and look at the sky or take in our regular surroundings with a fresh insight.” “Sitting on the top deck of a London bus, I let my mind stroll over the lives of the people on the street, they obtain new life stories; I’m placing myself in their shoes...
