About BoydDesign

BoydDesign is an architecture + design consulting firm that strives to preserve and enhance classic modern houses, while accommodating contemporary needs. All new and original design + architecture reflect modernist principles. It offers a turnkey service, from purchase to move-in, as well as advice on all issues pertaining to living in harmony with design: architecture, landscape, and interiors. It draws upon the expertise of Michael Boyd, who has won acclaim for the restoration of landmark houses, and his own furniture and garden design. Boyd offers clients what he has learned and practiced himself over three decades: locating and evaluating modern properties, analysis of client needs and options for new construction, restoring, remodeling and extending houses in the spirit of the original, interior design, custom furniture, selection and placement of vintage pieces, and lighting, landscaping and security.

Boyd’s skill in restoring and enhancing Oscar Niemeyer’s only North American house, located in Santa Monica, is celebrated in a critically-acclaimed book, Modernist Paradise: Niemeyer House, Boyd Collection (Rizzoli, 2007). BoydDesign did a meticulous restoration of Paul Rudolph’s legendary triplex in Manhattan, and has recently restored the work of Craig Ellwood, Richard Neutra, John Lautner, RM Schindler, and A. Quincy Jones. With each of these projects, BoydDesign selected and supervised talented experts and specialized craftspeople, and designed custom carpets (for Christopher Farr) and custom furniture for PLANEfurniture as well as all interiors. BoydDesign’s achievements have been featured in numerous publications around the world, and highlights of the Boyd Collection were the subject of a major exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), featured in the book Sitting on the Edge: Modernist Design from the Collection of Michael and Gabrielle Boyd (Rizzoli, 1998). The work of BoydDesign is also featured on the cover of The Iconic Interior 1900 to the Present (Thames and Hudson, 2012). In addition, Boyd is the designer and building restoration consultant for the WENDE Museum of Cold War Art in Culver City, CA.

In 2018, Boyd is involved in two books: Making LA Modern: Craig Ellwood, Myth|Man|Designer, which is edited by Boyd and published by Rizzoli, as well as C O N T I N U U M: Mid-Century This Century, written by Boyd.
