About the Item

For sale is this rare pair of Eskimo glasses designed by André Courrèges dating to 1965, an iconic accessory now held in countless museum collections including the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Molded in white acetate cellulose, the bold oval frames enclose round lenses uniquely bisected by an opaque horizontal band. Small silver-tone rivets accent the outer edges, underscoring their sculptural, futuristic appeal. The nickname Eskimo derives from their resemblance to protective snow goggles, though Courrèges intended them as a striking fashion statement rather than functional eyewear. Introduced during his groundbreaking mid-1960s “Space Age” collections, they epitomize the designer’s radical vision of youth, innovation, and modernist form. While this terminology is now considered culturally insensitive, it reflects the period’s marketing language and fascination with exoticized imagery. Similar examples appeared in leading fashion magazines such as Vogue and Elle, situating them firmly within the avant-garde style language of the decade. Extremely scarce on the market today, surviving pairs are most often found in museum and archival collections rather than private hands. Their rarity, combined with their unmistakable design, makes them one of the most collectible Courrèges accessories of the 1960's. Marked depose and Patent PV 5262 on the back of the "lenses". Made in France. Very good unworn condition.
