French Paisley Shawl called Palatin – Manufacture Fortier – Paris Circa 1839
About the Item
France Paris
Circa 1839
An early Jacquard shawl woven in shape and numbered 17280485 which allowed to fit closely to the form of the gigot sleeves dresses of the same period. Neo-gothic design with large center moon shape and architectured rolling edges in the taste of Amédée Couder, the famous french shawl designer from the early 19th century. Deep Green background woven with eight colors and original sewn arlequined fringes. A very similar exemple shown by Maison Fortier at Paris' Exposition Universelle 1839, is preserved in the collections of the Smithsonian Institute in the United States.
Dimensions: At least wide 172 cm X 168 cm, at the widest 216 cm, 196 cm.
A comparable model, presented at the Paris 1839 Universal Exhibition by Maison Fortier, is preserved in the collections of the Smithsonian Institute in the United States. Reference Parisian cashmere, Monique Levi-Strauss, page 70 and 75, a very short and similar pattern patented and filed by Fortier in 1838 (INPI).
