A Long Striped Paisley Shawl with Bayadère Decor - France Circa 1870
About the Item
Circa 1860-1880
France Provence
Long Paisley shawl in striped wool called Bayadère, as can be seen in the iconography of Provençal painting, including the Ex-voto. Woven decoration with large saffron, andrinople red, green-yellow, black and white stripes, fringed on the two longest sides (which is unusual). Intended to be worn initially on Second Empire dresses with a large skirt, it can be folded in two and keep very warm for a cocoon winter! Can also be used as a decoration, bed or sofa throw. Very few moth holes (less than 2 mm each), otherwise very good structural resistance to handling. Fresh colours as in the original. Very good condition of colour and conservation. From the Provencal collection of Daniel Audry.
