About the Item

Oscar de la Renta (1932-2014) for his Spring 1982 collection created a number of styles of bold vibrant uniquely-handpainted crepe-de-chine caftans that helped define his five-decade fashion legacy in the United States, while conjuring his Dominican Republic birthplace. So much so that five years after the designer's death at 82, one of his caftans--with the same exact maxi-dress construction, same colorful large ruffled-petal lilies and abstractions handpainted on white crepe-de-chine, and same teal banded neckline and sleeve hems as our floor-sweeping Oscar de la Renta-branded Spring 1982 Style 4030--starred on a prominent dramatic mannequin in a museum exhibition in that country's capital-city Santiago de los Caballeros. The show at Centro Leon about his fashion career and life was titled "Being Oscar de la Renta". When worn, this caftan appears rectangular at the top when the arms are held to each side at shoulder level. WWD featured this caftan prominently in the primary image that accompanied its article about the exhibit opening, which was published on November 22, 2019 (see our photo of the WWD Fashion Scoops image). Several years earlier in 2016 at a San Francisco museum, Vogue-associated fashion journalist and author Andre Leon Talley (1948-2022) curated the posthumous retrospective, "Oscar de la Renta, His Legendary World of Style" at the de Young, whose cherry-red exhibition walls also featured multiple caftan-clad mannequins. Further emphasizing the significance in fashion history of our maxi-dress design by de la Renta, Talley styled the matching floor-grazing caftan on a mannequin with outstretched arms in a vignette paired with another Spring 1982 shorter v-neck caftan, whereby viewers could see only the back of the longer handpainted white-background crepe de chine (with a different abstract-floral painting than ours, but most of the same colors), along with its banded neckline and sleeve hems (see our photos of the WWD coverage). Decades earlier in 1983, de la Renta had the foresight to donate some of his Spring 1982 handpainted crepe-de-chine caftans to the Kent State University Museum, which has a large fashion collection of 20th-Century American designers. Our caftan's ecru rectangular brand tag reads only "Oscar de la Renta" in brown-thread script (not also "for Swirl" like other loungewear styles), with an additional white label for his longtime retailer Saks Fifth Avenue. The excellent-condition gown shows no sign that it was ever worn. So the over-40-year-old printed care label found at a seam at the lower half of the dress remains fully legible, where also noted are the caftan material, style number, "Made in U.S.A.", and size "M". While almost any size person may wear this pullover gown due to the only restriction at the neckline and wide-sleeve cuffs, a person under 5'5" would need to wear heels given its 58-inch length from the shoulder seam at the V-neck to the hem. For perspective on other sales of well-documented pieces designed by the founder Oscar de la Renta and sold by 1stDibs dealers: a 2010-collection strapless maxi dress worn by actress Nicole Kidman for a broadcast awards-show appearance sold for $6,500, while a museum exhibited 2004-collection coat-and-boots set sold for nearly three times as much for the asking price of $18,000. Compared to current similar Oscar de la Renta-brand styles by the ongoing house's co-creative directors Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, their Italian-made viscose v-neck pullover maxi caftan in a "painterly abstract Moracaine" print is available for around $4,000 at Saks. Because of the prominence of our crepe-de-chine caftan style and its handpainted "abstract lilies" motif in the museum-curated context of Oscar de la Renta's entire career, as well as that it is more than 30 years older than the aforementioned 2004-collection sale also in pristine condition, we reasonably price our rarity at more than twice the aforementioned ready-to-wear retail offering.

StellaMcCartney 2003 Runway Silk Satin Print Zip Jacket OffShoulder Bubble Dress
By Stella McCartney
Located in Chicago, IL
Arguable the most significant design in the Stella McCartney Spring/Summer 2003 collection--since our versatile garment debuted in different colors on the runway and was worn by the British designer to take her fashion-show bow--this pink-printed dark-grey silk-blend zip-front bubble-shaped mini dress with white-satin stripes and pink piping was a favorite of the show's Vogue critic and her father Beatles co-founder Paul McCarthy. Vogue wrote: "Her hippest new idea came in the form of puffy satin bombers--she transformed one, a fusion of sport and chinoiserie print, into an off-the-shoulder bubble dress. McCartney is so into the glam-bomber idea, in fact, that she bounded onto the runway wearing a black version herself." The garment's voluminous batwing sleeves with stretch-cotton ribbed neckline and hem, plus custom golden-charm two-way zipper, enable it to have different necklines and lengths to convert to a shorter puffier bomber jacket. Notably, the versatile piece that is subtly printed with mock-Beatles lyrics seems to have been the first tribute fashion-design that McCartney created to reference her father. Prior, she had credited her stylish mother Linda for instilling her with a love of fashion and inspiration for her initial namesake collections, which followed her first commercial collections with Phoebe Philo for Chloe. For background, when McCartney was a young girl in 1978, the mock-rock band The Rutles parodied a Beatles song, which was recorded by EMI as "Ging, Gang, Goolie". Given its lyrics, the chinoiserie-style dragon motifs were substituted by McCartney with bird skeletons...

CommeDesGarcons 1999 RunwayLook12 BiasCut TranslucentSatin SalmonPink Maxi Dress
By Rei Kawakubo Comme Des Garcons, Comme des Garçons
Located in Chicago, IL
Rei Kawakubo designed this translucent salmon-pink bias-cut satin sleeveless maxi dress evening gown for her brand Comme des Garcons, which debuted on a model at Paris Fall Fashion Week as "Look 12" among the Vogue photo-coverage of her Spring/Summer 2000 collection (see our last photo of the ensemble). The unusual V-neck shape creates a deep central drape in the front of the unlined dress that prevents the synthetic semi-transparent fabric from clinging to the torso. To continue to flatter the curvy shape of the lower body like the bias-cut enables, such as while walking, Kawakubo added an additional piece of fabric with a circling angular seam that rises from the wider hem. With the exception of the brand tag, all others were cut off by the sole owner to eliminate bulk and visibility through the dress. If the buyer would prefer, the fabric can be made shinier and completely smooth with professional pressing. If the buyer would like to create a layered ensemble with this gown as seen on the runway, we have other textural colorful tops to choose from with over-dyed unique appliques from this same Spring/Summer 2000 collection. However, we think our backless-mannequin photos show that this minimal dress...

Pauline Trigère Abstract Floral Print Cotton Kimono Angel-Sleeve Dress, 1960s
Located in Boca Raton, FL
Pauline Trigère was a prominent figure in putting American designers on the map. Like many of the acclaimed French couturiers, she was an expert at tailoring and had an eye for interesting volumes. However true-to-form of the American aesthetic, Trigère designs are known for their relative simplicity and elegance through ease. From the late 1960s, this magnificent dress is a fine example of why Trigère’s designs were so beloved in Hollywood during that period. Done in a woven cotton featuring an abstract floral print in white, chartreuse, pink, lavender, and ochre on a navy ground, this dress is a wearable work of art. The bodice begins with a high round collar and has incredible sheer kimono...
