About the Item

The Louis Vuitton Rayee trunk in question is an unparalleled masterpiece of design and craftsmanship, holding the distinction of being one of only two ever created with its unique features. A tangible embodiment of exclusivity, its counterpart resides in the esteemed private collection of trunks at Louis Vuitton, underscoring the rarity and prestige of this piece. Originating from the 1870s, a period marked by innovation and luxury, this trunk is draped in the iconic Rayee canvas. The canvas, with its characteristic striped pattern, evokes a sense of timeless elegance, setting it apart from other designs of its time. Each stripe, meticulously woven, stands testament to the brand's unwavering commitment to perfection. Complementing the canvas is a rich leather trim that outlines the trunk. This leather detailing not only provides a beautiful contrast but also emphasizes the trunk's robust structure and the brand's dedication to using the finest materials. Over time, the leather has acquired a patina, telling tales of its storied past and adding depth to its appearance. The trunk's magnificence is further amplified by its gleaming brass hardware. These fixtures, from the hinges to the unique lock, serve a dual purpose: ensuring the trunk's security while also enhancing its aesthetic appeal. The brass's muted golden hue contrasts delightfully against the Rayee canvas and leather, adding layers of sophistication. The lock is particularly noteworthy. Unlike conventional designs, this unique lock stands out as a testament to the innovation and creativity that Louis Vuitton has always championed. It's not just a functional element but a focal point that captures the essence of the trunk's exclusivity. Inside, the trunk boasts a pristine and complete interior, reflecting its well-preserved state over a century. The presence of the original label on the trunk's side is a significant detail, authenticating its origin and serving as a badge of its illustrious history. This label, with its intricate design and typography, offers a glimpse into the brand's legacy. Adding a touch of functionality and elegance is a leather handle on the trunk's lid. This handle, crafted with precision, ensures ease of access and is yet another testament to Louis Vuitton's attention to detail. In summation, this Louis Vuitton Rayee trunk isn't just a piece of luggage; it's a museum-worthy artifact. Its unparalleled design, combined with its rarity, makes it an invaluable treasure for collectors and aficionados alike. Without a doubt, it stands as one of the rarest and most coveted trunks available in the market, echoing tales of luxury, artistry, and heritage.

Louis Vuitton Leather Cabin Trunk, circa 1930
By Louis Vuitton
Located in London, GB
A well proportioned natural leather covered Louis Vuitton cabin trunk that has built up an attractive patina with age. Has original leather handles & brass fittings and has its original interior in-tact (including the original tray); Circa 1930. One of the original handle supports is a newly made replacement of the original, that was beyond repair. Provenance: From the collection of Anouska Hempel, noted interior designer, hotelier and taste maker. Dimensions: 91 cm/35⅞ inches (length) x 52 cm/20½ inches (depth) x 34.5 cm/13⅝ inches (height). About Louis Vuitton From humble beginnings, Louis Vuitton laid the foundations for a luggage enterprise serving the upper echelons of 19th-century society. His son, Georges, expanded on his father’s work throughout the 20th century. Louis Vuitton was born on 4 August 1821 in Anchay, a rural village in Eastern France. His father, Xavier Vuitton, was a farmer, his mother, Coronne Gaillard, a milliner. In 1835, aged 13, Vuitton left Anchay on foot for his two-year journey to Paris. He found work as a layetier – a maker of wooden boxes and cases for transporting travelers’ possessions – and was selected as the personal layetier to Empress Eugénie de Montijo, a Spanish Countess and wife of Napoleon III. In 1854, at 4 Rue Neuve de Capucines, Paris, Vuitton launched his enterprise, gaining recognition among Parisian nobility. A second Parisian store opened at 1, Rue Scribe, after the 1871 Siege of Paris. Striped “Rayée” canvas and the first Vuitton Wardrobe Trunk arrived in the 1870s, expanding abroad to 289 Oxford Street, London, and introducing the Damier canvas in the 1880s. Louis Vuitton passed away in 1892, leaving the business to his son, Georges. He set about expanding the family firm even further, selling out at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. J.P. Morgan and family became valued clients, and Georges patented the iconic LV monogram design in 1896, paying homage to a medieval Franc box rosette motif from his personal collection. The early 1900s saw the Steamer Bag launch and new premises on the Champs Élysées. Georges was never one to shy away from a bespoke order; customers could, and regularly did, request whatever their heart desired. Legendary commissions included a “Malle Lit” explorer’s camp bed trunk...
