12th Century Indian Carved White Marble Figure of a Jain Tirthankara or Jina

About the Item

A well carved Indian white marble Jain temple relief fragment featuring an image of a Jina, circa 12th century, Rajasthan or Gujarat, India. The Tirthankara (also called a Jina) is an enlightened lord of the Jain religion. Carved from a single block of lustrous white marble, the Jina is portrayed standing upright in kayotsarga upon a lotus within a deeply carved niche. He wears a simple dhoti around his waist, the diaphanous cloth clinging to his legs. A shrivatsa (endless knot) mark, symbolizing attained knowledge, appears on the Jina's chest. An inscription translated as "Glorious Lord, advance", and most likely a later addition, has been carved to the base, possibly as an act of devotional graffiti. The white marble with an amazingly mellow and waxy patina from centuries of wear. When illuminated, the piece seems to glow. Mounted on a custom metal stand.
