About the Item

A brilliant era opened in Thailand with the installation of the sovereigns in Bangkok in 1782. Called "Rattanakosin", "Jewel of Indra", this period saw flourish an art that has lost nothing of its originality and its verve. Unlike the Buddha depicted in a monk’s simple garments, this standing Buddha wears a crown, jewellery, lavish robe and chest medallions elaborately decorated with inlaid ornamental pieces. The extensive adornment is a mark of Rattanakosin style of image. It is said that the crowned Buddha image is associated with the legend of Jambupati. Buddha changed himself into the form of a universal emperor enthroned in a palace in order to convert a skeptical king named Jambupati. The decoration extends from the robe all the way to the hands that palms were inlaid with flowery marks and rings were worn on all fingers. Apart from a flame attached to the top of the ushnisha, a flame-like mark is cast on the forehead of the Buddha, which is called the urna symbolising the vision into the divine world. In contrast to the type with the length of fingers approaching a more naturalistic handling, the fingers of this crowned standing Buddha are in the same length, one of the distinctive features of the Mon Hariphunchai type and as well as many of Thai Yuan types. The hands demonstrate a gesture called Abhaya Mudra, meaning the dispelling of fear, protection, and reassurance. This is a piece reaches artistic excellence by drawing a visual analogy between the attainment of Buddhahood and coronation as an emperor. The gorgeous ornaments and luxurious patterns enhance the overall presentation of the crowned Buddha in promising a pleasurable visual experience.
