A remarkable Chinese life sized painted stucco head of a luohan, Song, Liao or Jin Dynasty, circa 11th century, China.
The amazingly life-like figure depicts a luohan (sometime spelled lohan), also known as an arhat, one of the original disciples of the Buddha. The elderly man has been molded in stucco with inset glass eyes and painted with idealized, if slightly exaggerated features.
The unidentified luohan sports a bald, or perhaps shaved, domed head above a bulging forehead, symbolizing his vast wisdom. The wrinkles in his furrowed brow, and creases around his eyes add to his realism. The learned man stares out wisely from deep set, heavily lidded inlaid glass eyes that catch the light.
The luohan has high cheekbones and a prominent jawline. His lips full and pursed as if about to speak. The corners of his mouth turned up ever so slightly in a faint smile, causing his gaunt cheeks to dimple charismatically. A series of dots above the upper lip indicate he may originally have sported a mustache of real hair.

Emmanuel Villanis comes from a family of Italian origin. From 1861, his parents returned to Italy to settle in Piedmont. He had fled Italy because the war of independence broke out, under the threat of Napoleon Bonaparte. In 1871, the artist enrolled at the Albertina Academy of Fine Arts in Turin; he follows the teaching of the sculptor Odoardo Tabacchi (1831-1905). As soon as he finished his studies, his master encouraged him to exhibit: his bust Alda, for example, was presented in Milan in 1881. In 1885, Villanis moved to Montmartre, a district of Paris that he never left. The artist's fame is built on his production of female figures. Aida, Judith, Delilah, Lucretia, Cinderella: her work brings together the great heroines of opera, literature, mythology and the Bible. Villanis also discusses certain types - the Bohemian, the Châtelaine, or the Parisienne - and several allegories, including Painting and Sculpture. Made mainly in bronze, sometimes chryselephantine, his sculptures subtly bear the mark of Art Nouveau, including the lettering of the title, which regularly adorns the base. His play on the patinas further adds to the finesse of the line, making Villanis one of the major sculptors of Art Nouveau. This exceptional Chinese Export Silver bowl has a plain circular form onto a plain circular swept, spreading foot.
The body of this antique Asian silver bowl is embellished with chased traditional oriental chrysanthemum floral and foliate designs, all on a matte background.
The decoration to the body incorporates a large shield shaped vacant cartouche to one side.
The upper portion of this impressive bowl is encircled with a plain applied moulded border to the incurved shaped rim.
The hallmarks struck to the underside of the bowl include:
