About the Item
This stone pot was made in Korea during the late Joseon dynasty, between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its sturdy appearance, carved from a granite-like stone, emanates a powerful presence that transcends time.
Korea has had a long-standing "stone culture," and the custom of using stone for everyday tools, such as stone mills, stone incense burners, and stone ashtrays, has been passed down for generations. This is testament to the Korean Peninsula's abundant stone resources, including granite, and the advanced technology for processing them. Stone pots like this one were used as cooking utensils in everyday life, and are valuable artifacts that tell the story of pre-modern Korean lifestyles and culture.
Of particular note is its design, characterized by a rounded body, flat lid, and four protruding protrusions on the sides. The overall form is reminiscent of the uniquely Korean "abacus" design, and this stone pot also embodies the beautiful symmetry seen in ceramics. The four protrusions function as a handle and are thought to have been designed to make it easier to place in the kiln. They also add a unique charm to the design.
It is believed that in the past, it was actually used to cook food over an open fire, but in modern times, it is primarily used as an ornamental piece or flower vase rather than for practical use. Simply inserting a branch into the wide opening creates a dignified atmosphere in any space, or simply leaving it alone creates a work of art. It will make a great addition to your interior as a quiet, tranquil "stone sculpture."
At 45.7cm wide, 44.7cm deep, and 29.8cm high, and weighing 20.5kg, it is a medium-sized pot that is both striking and easy to handle. It is suitable for both floor placement and display on a low stand.
Similar stone pots to this one are featured in the collection of the Japan Folk Crafts Museum and in some art books, further confirming their high cultural and artistic value. This item beautifully combines the timeless texture of stone with the simple beauty of a practical household item.
