Archaic Jade Bi, Liangzhu Period
About the Item
Museum-quality Chinese jade Bi from the Liangzhu period (3300-2200 BC). For the Liangzhu, jade was the primary material through which the secular and religious authority of its leaders was expressed.
Jade Bi discs, which are believed to represent the Heavens, together with the rectangular Cong, which represent the Earth, were the essential ritual objects created by the Liangzhu. They also played a significant role by indicating the authority and power of their owners.
Bi discs do not usually bear any decoration: they represent the true celebration of the simple yet elegant geometric shape of the circle.
