Ming Jarlet with Green Glaze

About the Item

Small Ming pottery jarlet with handles and a green glaze. 16th century. This charming, somewhat rustic piece is like a miniature version of the large earthenware jars used to store water. It has a rounded body, small handles, and a pronounced lip. The piece's most attractive quality is the number of color variations in the glaze, from forest green to apple green to celadon, flecked with tan and brown. There is a section of glaze missing towards the foot on one side; it is difficult to tell if this was a firing error or whether it came off from wear. There is also a small chip of missing glaze on the base of one of the handles. This would make a thoughtful gift.
